    Something's Not Right...Should I Call Someone?

I went out to Restaurant A (not using names to protect the innocent) on Friday night. I had a $60 gift card and the meal came out to $68. I left a $30 tip and when I checked my account history just now it's showing up as only an $8 charge without the $30 tip included.

Went to lunch yesterday at Restaurant B. Had more gift cards and the meal came out to $60 and I had $50 in gift cards. I left a $20 tip and on my account it shows up as only a $10 purchase.

I'm baffled. Are the servers being cheated out of their tips or what? Should I call someone or just wait and see if it gets charged later?

I know this doesn't change your situation, but you might consider carrying cash if you're going to tip. I know, I rarely carry cash anymore but if I'm going out to a nice dinner I'll usually bring $10 just for the tip if I decide to give one.

I HATE the government taxing tips I give servicepeople and try to avoid anything on paper. If they want to claim it, that's cool by me but I don't want to force them to claim it.

What's up with having all these gift cards? Don't people give real gifts anymore?
I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,
I can tell them that I work with the mentally retarded.

yeah tipping with a card sucks, 99% of the tip goes to the owner

I'd call or stop by the restaurant and if something is up that the waiter didn't get their tip, I'd make sure to leave what I originally wanted to in cash - directly to the waiter

I do a lot of work for Clear Channel and their sales reps hand them out like candy. Just about every time I get a visit from a sales rep they give me some sort of gift which is usually a gift certificate to a nice local restaurant.

Why did I tip so much? Because I only paid $8 for great food and great service. When I have gift certificates then I ALWAYS tip big because even if I tip $30 on a $60 G.C. then I'm saving $30. I guess that's the way I look at it. I paid $38 for a $68 meal...not including tip. If I pay 100% of the bill then I usually leave 20% - 25%.

I remember when I was in college in Miami I worked at several restaurants and bars. I used to hate it when people would come in and leave a tip AFTER the deduction instead of the entire check. Servers still have to tip out on the gross amount regardless of the amount deducted from G.C.

The only reason I left big tips on those occasions is because 90% of the food was comped.

I usually leave 20% or 25% if I get great service.
