you had a daughter who's husband would not let her get any treatment and the courts forced you to stand idly by while he killed her?

I too, had a family member in a coma. Doctors said to send him to a home and forget about him, he'd never recover.
My parents brought my brother home and today, he's 100% normal, husaband, father.

so please don't imagine I don't know what I'm talking about.

This coming from Mr.Bush is a flip-flop Kerry would be proud of ... the rest of them gave in to public pressure. Every day people are taken off life support in this country under similar circumstances but the politicians only become involved when it's a major news item. I agree it's their duty, but that duty should apply to all: Not just those that get major air time on CNN.

No one can say until they are in that situation, but you neglected to mention that this was Terry's wishes. Perhaps unproven, but so were the stories her family told that she wanted to live. It's he said/she said and the courts have repeatedly told her family that they don't have the right.

The law has said this over and over: They just refuse to accept reality. I feel their pain but they have tied up the courts, politicians and cost thousands and thousands of dollars of YOUR money to stubbornly fight a battle they have lost too many times to count. They have exhausted the system and even today, after another rejection last night they are STILL moving to another court to seek help.

Memo to her parents/family: People support your wishes to keep your daughter/sister alive. But you've lost. Even the intervention of the President himself didn't make a difference. You've gotten more appeals, more public pressure, more government involvement than 99% of us could ever dream of. You've spent a LOT of public money to fight this and it's time to let it go. It's over. Start your grieving process by first accepting defeat. Say your goodbyes and prepare a nice ceremony. But let it go.

GOP memo says issue offers political rewards

            By The Washington Post

WASHINGTON ? Republican leaders believe their attention to the Terri
Schiavo issue could pay dividends with Christian conservatives whose
support they covet in the 2006 midterm elections, according to a GOP
memo intended to be seen only by senators.

The one-page memo, distributed to Republican senators by party
leaders, called the debate over Schiavo legislation "a great political
issue" that would appeal to the party's base, or core, supporters. The
memo singled out Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who is up for re-election
            next year.

"This is an important moral issue, and the pro-life base will be
excited that the Senate is debating this important issue," said the
memo, reported by ABC News and later given to The Washington Post.
"This is a great political issue, because Senator Nelson of Florida
has already refused to become a co-sponsor and this is a tough issue
            for Democrats."

Just this week a baby was removed from life support against his mother?s wishes in Texas under the Texas Futile Care Law that George Bush signed.

              Where was everyone then?

This is political pandering to the base and nothing more.

Talking points were circulated among Republican senators explaining why they should vote to intervene in the Schiavo case.

So the husband not allowing film of Terri for 2 years is presenting evidence how? Why shouldn't the court that is making the decision to pull her plug have visual confirmation as to the ascertations of her condition, especially since the 2 sides report it very differently? Judges often take the jury to a crime scene, little difference would be visiting this woman personally and seeing for themselves which side is correct.

She is not brain dead. If she were brain dead she would have to be hooked up to a ventilator.

If these are lies, it's not just the parents telling them. I've seen several interviews with people who have been involved with her care.

you can have no brain activity and breath on your own. How many doctors have said she is not going to get better she has no brain activity. Doctors who did examine her, who would want to live like that? Her parents are selfish people

what is so tough for you to undestand? the law is and has been followed. numerous doctors have been involved and given the courts opinions. the courts have made a few rulings. its done. it's over. repeated rulings were made on this case over the years. the final decision is that she is in a "persistent, vegitative state". sorry. nothing illegal happened. the law is being followed. you are an emotional twit who does not seem to understand the legal system and how it works, yet want to make legal arguments. why not make it more interesting and start an even more meaningless debate on quantum mechanics or colliding atoms?

you would sound much more intelligent if you would just say "i dont agree with this - thats just my opinion" and people could respect that. why highlight your ignorance by making rediculous statements and remarks about a legal system you apparently don't understand?

No Dr mardigras but the many judges in Florida have seen the 4 hours video of Ms Schiavo and that's why they made the decision that she was a vegatable that will not recover from her brain damage. The judges also were told by the doctors who examined her close up and person and not just by video told the judges that she will not recover.

Her husband sought out...for the first two years or so...all available treatment for her...when he was informed that she could never improve because her brain cortex is non-existent and is filled with spinal fluid he ceased seeking out treatment for her. Without growing a new brain cortex (has never happened in medical history) she is a hopeless case. Her parents refused to accept this decision and refused to accept the fact that their daughter cannot improve...as her cortex does not exist anymore.

Also her EEG is flatlined...which means that she has no significant brain activity. All she has left in her is reflexive movement...she...as a person is not there...she does not have a brain cortex.

As for any monies involvled there different stories...but at least one story is that there is not any money that the husband will get...unless she has a life insurance policy. After the award...the attorneys got their share...the husband got his share...for loss of consortium...etc. there was approximately $200,000 put in trust for her care. There would be little if any money at all left in this trust...as it has been in use for a number of years.

The parents wanted to continue rehab.
After the so called husband finds a girlfriend, and stands to inherit a couple million, he remembers her saying she didn't want to live in a coma.
There is no written evidence of this and no evidence that this wasn't just two people watching the "karen ann quinlan story" and one of them says, "I wouldn't want to live like this"

And in what world do we live where the parents who have nothing to gain are wrong to want to rehab her but the husband who will inherit millions, upon her death, is right?

If there is no living will then the default decision should be to keep alive.

This guy has moved on to a new wife, children, etc, why does he want, essentially his ex-wife, dead so bad. Why does he care, he dosen't want her in his life. This girls family obviously wants her alive.

He just wants money, and closure while hes banging his new girl.

What's sad is how the news media keeps stories like this in the public eye. This is a personal issue. I'm not really too concerned with it.

Lacey Peterson? Stuff like that happens so often it made no sense for it to be on every channel every day.

Talk to me about the important stuff like health insurance, gas prices, what new fuckstick the government is sticking up our asses today. That's the shit I want to know about that isn't being fully reported on.

You do realize the husband has had the advantage of spending a significant amount of the money set aside for her care on legal actions? You can hire as many experts as you can afford to say what you want in court.

There are too many people besides the family that say her condition has been misrepresented by her husband during legal actions and is being misrepresented in much of the media.

Terri's behavior does not meet the medical or statutory definition of persistent vegetative state. Terri responds to stimuli, tries to communicate verbally, follows limited commands, laughs or cries in interaction with loved ones, physically distances herself from irritating or painful stimulation and watches loved ones as they move around her. None of these behaviors are simple reflexes and are, instead, voluntary and cognitive. Though Terri has limitations, she does interact purposefully with her environment.

If the woman was lying comatose it would be one thing it but as long as there are people (including medical professionals that have been involved in her care) that say comments such as above, I don't agree with killing her, and if not agreeing with killing her until it's shown that any courts have actively investigated and disproven them makes me an "emotional twit" then so be it. At the very least they should do it quickly with drugs

If she wasn't breathing on her own, that's one thing... it would be quick and painless then. But now they have to wait for her to die of dehydration. I couldn't live with myself being responsible for someone dying like that. Not even convicted murderers on death row will die like that. She will suffer and she can't even communicate her pain to anyone. Breaks my heart.

Either they put her in a drug induced coma, from which she'll never awake from, or they give her a morphine drip, do there is no pain..

Who will decide for you? Your spouse? Or your parents?

Exactly. Wake the fuck up. When she married the guy her parents lost any stranglehold they may think that they had over their child.

If I had a wife that was relying on her parents for our life decisions she would be out the door so fucking fast her head would spin.

If so, grow up. If not, then start putting things into perspective. If she was a teenager I would agree with you, the parents have some say. As an adult they do not . . . married or not.

And they sure do not have any fucking say when MY tax dollars are at stake. Keeping her alive for their own selfishness, because they don't want to outlive their child.

Well, fuck them, it happens daily. Welcome to reality.

Why does he care, he dosen't want her in his life. This girls family obviously wants her alive.

He just wants money, and closure while hes banging his new girl.

Because the man went and moved on with his life he is supposed to forget the wishes of his former wife? I don't think so. If he cared about her once and still cares about her he should respect her wishes.
