What bothers me most about this, is that it's a cruel way to let someone die. If she wasn't breathing on her own, that's one thing... it would be quick and painless then. But now they have to wait for her to die of dehydration. I couldn't live with myself being responsible for someone dying like that. Not even convicted murderers on death row will die like that. She will suffer and she can't even communicate her pain to anyone. Breaks my heart.

Check out http://terrisfight.orgPosted in another thread.Originally posted by thekingShe had a heart attack in 1990 (possibly caused by an eating disorder...bulimia)...and her brain was deprived of oxygen...causing severe brain damage.
For the first two years or so her husband made use of all available known medical procedures that could have possibly improved her condition.
Somewhere along the line a CAT scan was done and it showed that the cortex of her brain no longer existed and had filled with spinal fluid...which means without growing a new cortex she is beyond improvement in her condition. In addition her EEG was flatlined...which means there is not any signifcant brain activity. At this point the husband being informed that her condition was hopeless...he discontinued seeking out treatment to improve her condition. Her parents and he had a major falling out over this decision...but it was his decision to make and not theirs.
It is untrue that he was the only one that was told that she would not want to live via life support. More than one friend of hers testified to this in court.
It is my understanding that the husband does not stand to gain any money from her death other than the possibility that she may have a life insurance policy. She was awarded money for her care and he was awarded money from the same suit for the damage done to his wife. After he collected his share of the award and the attorneys collected their share of the award the remainder of the money was placed in trust for her care. When you're running down my country hoss...you're walking on the fighting side of me!

Schiavo Feels No Pain
CLEVELAND-Patients in a persistent vegetative state like Terri Schiavo are a subgroup who suffer severe anoxic brain injury and progress to a state of wakefulness without awareness.
It is judged to be permanent after three months if induced nontraumatically. After 3 months, recovery is rare and life expectancy is approximately 2 to 5 years.
Patients in a persistent vegetative state do not feel pain, nor do they "suffer," says Michael De Georgia, MD, head of the neurology-neurosurgery intensive care unit at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation here.
Pain, as well as suffering, requires consciousness, which is lacking in a person in a persistent vegetative state, says Dr. De Georgia.
"Certainly these patients don't suffer," he adds. "Suffering is really that whole emotional aspect of pain: fear, anxiety, panic surrounding pain. You have to have consciousness to experience these emotions. So just as a person in a persistent vegetative state can't experience pain because of a lack of consciousness, they also don't suffer."

If she feels no pain then there is no harm in trying to rehabilitate her. The husband wants her dead to inherit what's left of the 2.6 mil she received in the law suit.
Again, if she feels no pain, there is no rush to kill her to save her from her present condition. There is no harm to do what the parents want and the husband has forbidden for over 10 yrs, rehabilitate her!I'm not a dinosaur, I'm a crocodile. This is sad!
"Schiavo's cerebral cortex has been completely destroyed, replaced by spinal fluid; Dr. Ron Cranford, a neurologist at the University of Minnesota assessed Schiavo's brain function in 2001 as part of a court-ordered assessment. He was quoted in Florida Today as saying "[Schiavo] has no electrical activity in her cerebral cortex on an EEG (electroencephalogram), and a CT (computerized tomography) scan showed massive atrophy in that region."Looking for Opportunity!

If she's brain dead, it's not like she's aware that she's starving to death. She's BRAINDEAD! If this were a hundred years ago and nobody had the miracles of modern medicine, she'd already be dead and this would be a moot point. Just because we have the capabilities of keeping someone alive, should we? Eventually the cost filters down to the taxpayers, and let's be honest, all the family are doing is prolonging their own suffering. Even her husband said that she wouldn't have wanted to live that way. So now the court systems are tied up and taxpayers are paying so that her parents who refuse to let go can fight to keep her alive (against her own wishes and her husband's), and all it's going to do in the end is cause even MORE grief. What's better, to dwell in the past, or to live in the now and keep the memories of the past in your heart? It's a sad thing, but she should be left to rest.Comment

The husband stopped medical care and rehab for her shortly after she won 2.6 million dollars in a law suit.
The parents wanted to continue rehab.
After the so called husband finds a girlfriend, and stands to inherit a couple million, he remembers her saying she didn't want to live in a coma.
There is no written evidence of this and no evidence that this wasn't just two people watching the "karen ann quinlan story" and one of them says, "I wouldn't want to live like this"
And in what world do we live where the parents who have nothing to gain are wrong to want to rehab her but the husband who will inherit millions, upon her death, is right?I'm not a dinosaur, I'm a crocodile. I've seen dinosaurs come and go and I'm left unimpressed.Comment

Originally posted by bluffIt's not sad at all, it's sad how some people cannot accept the ways of life. It's actually unbelievable how some people let their rational thinking go and be led by religious dictations. The judge has made a wise decision.
He is correct. Its a very sad story and no one wants to see this lady suffer. However, its also very scary that our government thinks they can walk in, pass new law just to satisfy the religous right. Government interevention in our personal lifes is NOT a good thing people and this was exactly what that was. As of right now, 21 judges of out 22 have shown that Terri was given her due process and EVERY avenue was gone over to make sure her right were protected. While we may not like that this poor women has to die, the fact remains that the law was upheld and our system, weather you think its right or wrong, still works.
Congress and the Religous Right needed to be bitch slapped for what they did and our Constitution did it yet again today. Its sad this ladies life was the test of it, but it would not have been if Ton Delay and those wacko religious right people didnt reinvent the system for their own political gain.SIG TOO BIG! This is actually an extremely important legal case deciding who ultimately controls a person when they become incapacitated. We're joking around here quite a bit because we all think we are invincible. Terri wasn't born this way. None of us was born that way.Originally posted by CashThis topic is really boring, it doesn't deserve to be main news on major news agencies ... (btw, schiavo in Italian means slave)
But tomorrow any of us could be in a car accident and end up like this. Who will decide for you? Your spouse? Or your parents?
I'd bet hardly anyone here has a liviing will addressing this point. Do you want the government to decide if your spouse says let you die, but your parents say keep you alive? That is why this case became so important in the news. Not only does it determine who gets to decide, it also will set legal precedent as to the power of the goverment over your life.
To say this case if boring is unfair to the case. It is etremely important as it goes to the basic "right to life" issues that conservatives hold dear to their hearts and half the population holds exactly opposite.
This is closely linked to the issue of what are the rights of an unborn fetus? What if the mother says I don't want this child, I'm getting and abortion, but the father to be says NO its half mine and I say let it live and give it to me? What if the government writes new laws that limit the decision making power of a couple to terminate a pregnency.
This is why cases like this are so critical. Their outcome affects all of us.
