Wayne Gretzky found on my sofa

Back in 1999 the Canadian Ice Hockey team were playing at London arena.

We arent big into Ice Hockey. A good friend of mine was head of London Arena security. I used to have a big batchelor pad by the Arena.

At about 10.30 my mate turns up at my place with 5 Canadian guys. They are ice hockey players. There are 40 plus in my place and these guys come in. We just think they are from a great country 'Canada'. We are all just getting drunk and partying. I am talking to one guy called Wayne, he tells me he plays ice hockey and was doing the show at London Arena. We then talk bollocks and have a good laugh together. I let a few people stay the night at the flat and this Wayne is one of them. I give him a cover and he sleeps on the sofa. Next morning we all wake up, complain about hang overs, I make breakfast and we all go out for Sunday lunch.

Apparently this Wayne guy is Wayne Gretzy (Whoever the fuck that is). My mate who was the head of security called me today and told me he has been trying to get in contact with me for the last few weeks as he is coming over to the UK and wants to go out again.

Right I have just found the pictures of him on my sofa. I dont have a flat bed scanner here so I cant scan them in. I will get that done monday.

I do have his mobile phone number!

Sounds like BS to me. Number 99 retired in early 1999.

I think at that point late in his career, the multi-millionaire Wayne Gretzky (the greatest hockey player ever, or in your words, "whoever the fuck that is") probably had gotten over the necessity to sleep on other people's couches.

Since you have his number give him a call so that you can plan your reunion since you indicated he is so anxious to reconnect with you.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures on Monday.

In London he is nothing. Just a person. Yes he is a multimillionaire, we never knew that. We treated him as a Canadian in London. Maybe he liked being with people who didnt know who he was.

I was in my house sorting though pictures with another Canadian friend of mine and he was the pictures of Wayne and said " That looks like Wayne Gretzky on your sofa" I said yeah the guy is called Wayne he plays ice hockey. I showed my mate a jersey that Wayne had given me the next day with OILER down the front of it. It has Gretzky on the back and is number 99. It was signed at the bottom but because I have washed it the signature ihas run out. I didnt realise he had autographed it. After the first wash I thought it was a stain so kept washing it to get rid of it.

The autograph is now totally gone as I use it when I snowboard on Sundays so I wash it on a regular basis.

Relish XXX this is very amusing to say the least. I have no reason not to believe you. But you must understand the gravity of the statement you just made.

Saying "Wayne", as you like to call him, is a decent hockey star is the equivelent of calling the Beetles a somewhat successful music group.

Wayne is to Hockey what God is to religon. Wayne is to hockey what the Beetles are to music. So to call him a decent hockey star is a gross understatement.

The marriage thing and the year of 1999 is now making me think that someone was winding me up.

However, the fact that after all these years he has come back to the UK and wants to buy me a beer for putting him up makes me think it is real.

Why would he lie to me when in the UK we dont know who he is at all? It was only when I googled his name I found out that he is probably more important than our Queen!

Not hard to believe when he was on the Isle of Dogs in London and that night due to terrorist attack alert the two bridges were closed. He had two choices, sleep on my sofa or sleep on the street.

Right on, hes a cool guy, met him once before. I went to a hockey school when I was younger put on by his brother. Special guests at the school, were NHLer's Rob Blake, Marty Mcsorley, and the great one himself, Wayne Gretzky.
