        My concern is real. I have no hate for the US. I lived there for 8 years before I moved to where I am at and employed over 100 US citizens at my business there... I am quite serious about the issue at hand the article raised.

        I am shocked that this can take place and people aren't screaming out their windows for the madness to stop. This is to me may be the most serious long term threat to democracy and freedom in the US. If the people cannot access independant somewhat objective news and are being manipulated by propoganda disguised as news to make gov't actions get smoothed over in the public and hide the truths about their actions...than what can be worse for a country's future if this practice is taken to an extreme?

Now that takes the point of view that the US is becoming less democratic in its institutions. My example is just one of many that I could use to show that idealized democracy has never existed here. There's not a decrease in democratic institutions. There's the same ebb and flow, the same debate between security and liberty that there always has been. The debate began even before the writing of the constitution between the federalists and the anti-federalists. Once the country was founded the debates continued in the legislative and judicial branches and have to this day. Take the Alien and Sedition Act that I mentioned as an example. This act was passed by those who put security ahead of liberty during a time when it was perceived that security was more important. This is similar in our time to the Patriot Act.
                                            There are many more examples from American History.

They were made up propoganda pieces disguised as a real news story by a real news reporter to influence people to accept the gov't line. This is what is the issue, not if the subject matter had any truth to it.

                                                                                    The Alien and Sedation Act was one of the most ugly incidents in your country's history, and you're right it was similar to the Patriot Act. Hopefully Jefferson can win in 2008 and pardon everyone falsely arrested and held without trial at gitmo. I see your point, but I very strongly disagree, if the Alien and Sedation act had been kept and enforced since the 18th century, you'd be living in a pretty fucked up country.

                                                                                            Yes, that's what it is, I don't agree with it and I never said my government was perfect, believe me. All governments use propaganda. However, if they started airing fake news stories on CBC that come from Chretien's PR people, he would have been held over the coals. That kind of thing only flies in the former USSR, and apparently, the new USSR.

                                                                                            "Karen Ryan reporting", that would have lost Jean Chretien his position in a week.

                                                                                            Look what happened when the people found out he gave a couple million bucks from that to his pals, his party lost their majority and he's being grilled about it over a year after he left.
