Both of my sons were done as infants. I cried for both of them because it looked so horribly painful. I really don't know which way is better, but if I hadn't done it while they were babies I know I could not have had it done now that they are older.

The child's mother wants him circumcised to prevent recurring, painful inflammation he has had 5 times in the last year. She says the boy cries and begs her to help him. If the circumcision will help that then dad needs to STFU.

The foreskin is the only part of the body anyone would consider amputating to prevent swelling or infection. Women who get infections "down there" do not ever have anything removed. Only in America are people both vain and stupid enough to consider circumcision acceptable for no reason other than the above i.e. vanity and ignorance. The rest of the civilised world either has religion as a (albeit poor) excuse or regards it as what it is - mutilation.

There are rare instances where it is needed for medical reasons, however even this case is far from clear cut (no pun intended) and as someone said is very possibly a simple case of bad hygeine. It's VERY easy to stay clean and infection free when uncircumcised unless the foreskin genuinely is far too tight.

Personally I left the decision up to my son and left him uncircumsiczed. Circumcision removes extremely important nerve endings, and the proceedure can rob a person of up to 60% of their sensitivity right off the bat. The key is to teach the kids how to keep themselves clean. When they are old enough to make the decision, they can get circumcised easily enough on their own.. I know lots of guys who have done it as adults and they say the only issues they had were a few days of soreness.
