[email protected] is kind of short and was probably computer generated, as a former spammer myself i can tell you that there are many apps that will go and harvest shitloads of domains then you can insert a word list so it generates [email protected]. That might have been what happend to you. If you want to be 100% sure that a company is actually selling your emails add 4 random numbers to the end of your username for the email.
