I modestly disagree.
True, in rugby you don't use equipment, but it is for a reason that you use equipment in American Football. If you try playing "professional" football without equipment you would literally die. In rugby you can only hit the player with the ball, and below the waist I believe. In American Football everyone hits each other. There are blind side hits, there are players running down a straight line, looking back at the ball, and as soon as they catch it get popped brutally by a defender without ever seeing it coming. Also, all the equipment you see on a player is not only used for protection, but also for hitting.
The thing with Amercian Football is that the entire mentality of the game is violent.
