Correct. Rugby was originally very popular in the US and American Football was derived from the Rugby game largely because it was felt that Rugby was too brutal a game. They also wanted a game more strategy based and less free flowing. The protection came about (ironically) to make the physical contact element less of an issue as it was with rugby.
Soccer is the worlds most popular sport largely because it is simple to play. You don't need equipment except for 1 ball and the rules are very basic. No matter how poor or deprived you are you can still play soccer. In most of black Africa it is a relegion. No other sport can or ever will challenge soccer's world domination.
It is also the greatest sport on the planet
