it is one of those things where you either do or you don't. Hard to explain unless you do.
In a lot of ways it is the childhood bonding with your father thing that used to be the cased with American men and their father's with baseball. So, from that young age it gets into your blood.
I'm American by birth but I played soccer/football as a kid and learned to love it that way. Then when moving here ten years ago I arrived smack in the middle of Euro '96 which is sort of like a mini world cup. From being thrown in at the deep end I learned that at that level it isn't just the game that is involved but national pride and in many ways it is a soap opera played out on grass. ahhhh
