Man I hate having to chase after money that I have earned. It's the most annoying and time wasting thing in this entire industry. Does everyone have it like that? Or just us lowly designers?

If I only had a nickel for every thread like this I've seen posted by a designer who hasn't been paid, I'd be about four thousand dollars wealthier than I am now.

Sad to say it, but maybe there comes a time when a designer has to put up samples of his completed work for the customer, samples which have giant watermarks on them that say "S-A-M-P-L-E O-N-L-Y"... then tell the client that they will have to pay in full before any actual design content is transfered. Period.

Even the long-time trusted clients. They should be willing to pay up front anyway, because they know you'll deliver.

Lastly, although I've had nowhere near the amount of paid design work that some of you guys have had, I HAVE had a good many design jobs and I'm proud to say that I have never once been ripped off like this from anyone.

Actually more than you might think. I can think of several off the top of my head, actually.

But whatever, my point is that maybe it's time to start taking payment on completion but BEFORE the work is transfered. That's all.

I got screwed twice by big companies,
I figured they're big and they'd have no problems paying after the work is done. I was very mystaken. Going through the hierarchy of reps up to the top and waiting 3 months to get my money, needless to say I learned my lesson. I have a portfolio, if the customer likes it, and wants to order, the payment is upfront, he already knows what he can expect. So, 100% upfront with new clients and very rarely 50% upfront with established clientele. Every designer should practise this.

My stuff is always for sale.. but I'll be honest it would take a pretty good offer to grab that domain.

                                    Understandable.

Umm, ya shouldnt be afraid of the legality.
If a kettle is black Call it and if its all in the format with Public info and statements. Plus any information on post boards and legal documents released by various Jurisdictions in the USA and abroad ya will be fine.

Infact there may soon be some legalities for web writers to get the benefits of Journalists with confidiential sources and information. As it stands right now many web writers enjoy the freedom an Journalist would have.

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

Lest they be designers, the lowest and most common whore,
Their toil from which I make my bank and never pay a fee.
I bend them over, ram them hard, and show them to the door.
Their trials and tribulations are of no concern to me,
For the eastern sun has shed the light on a cheaper foreign shore.

Well Thomas I have to say that the 'cheaper foreign shore' brings us more work every week. I laugh and rub my hands with glee when I see people referring other webmasters to the Asian outsourcers for written work because I know that it's only a matter of time before that poor misguided webmaster comes back to us to do the job right.

Yeah outsourced labor (specifically of south-eastern origin) has been extremely flawed (and I can attest to this from personal experience), though there are some individuals that have incredible artistic talent.

But you're missing the point, and that is, that the infrastructure is already in place for those who have means to set up shop in such places and spend the time and money neccessary to get them whipped into shape.

Regardless of the fact that plenty of competent, knowlegeable and and honest talent exists in the US, Canada and Europe, the lure of a cheap, exploitable workforce is a sweet juicy plum that has already more than turned some heads. There are companies actively working this angle to their own advantage.

No Thomas I don't miss the point.

I understand where you're coming from but for some providers in this industry there is just no substitute for people who have spoken English from birth.

It doesn't matter how many university degrees someone may have in English literature they will simply never be able to overcome the hurdle of being able to speak the language as it is spoken in places like the US, Australia and the UK.

Those people will always turn out copy that is stilted or unnatural and because English is not their first language they won't even see the problem.

That English language problem should flow over into the graphic design area too.

And any westerner who goes to those countries and sets up a business and employs them is usually too lazy to check their work ... and that just means more dollars in the bank for us.

As I said before, I really do laugh when people recommend others to trot off to the Asian outsourcers to get their work done because invariabley they come back to us bitterly disappointed that they paid good money to people who just could not produce quality work.

Half up front, half upon completion. and you get no files until the $ is the account. Period. I trust very few, and even less people who hang out here.

Steve, no offense, but you are missing the point. Take langauage out of the equation for a moment and picture a room full of outsourced labor that's been trained very specific, and otherwise repetitive graphical tasks for several months and you might catch my drift.

Just for argument' sake, let's just assume that any large program with the means to do so could setup such an operation and train people reliably crank out gallery templates, tours, fpas, hpas and the like, and do so for 1/5th the price they now pay. Do you really think it's not happening?

I know for a fact it is.

Having said that, it's not as if there wont be opportunities for those outside that loop, but it's definately going to make it far tighter market than it is now.
