Yes, it's spin. He didn't say, "It's absurd to claim that our troops are ordered to target civilians", that would have pinned the responsibility on the higher ups. It's a classic propaganda tool, Clinton used it too, so did Hitler. I wrote a thesis on wartime propaganda, trust me these guys are the best. By saying "our men and women in uniform", he made it sound like she was saying the the troops themselves decided to kill her, which is not what she said. In reality she originally indicated that they were instructed to kill her.

I'm not saying that they were instructed to kill her, again I don't know. What I'm saying is, it's amazing how a subtle change in language like that completely alters what was said. By saying it that way, you have to place the responsibility on the individual soldiers, something not many people will do, to give any credibility to the journalist's statements.

This was an unfortunate incident that would not have occured had the Italians, who support the Terrorists by actually paying the ransoms, actually been following the curfew rules set up by the military and Iraqi leadership for well over a year now. Everyone over there knows not to drive head on into a military check point and not obey their signals to stop. Her story does not even remotely match up with the other Italian's stories who were with her in the car. Only one was killed the others all gave their statements at the scene and they all concur more with the American's story than with hers. So quit passing your judgements until the whole thing is investigated and the real story is uncovered.
