Iraq Less Violent than Washington, D.C!

    http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2...706.shtml?s=ic

Despite media coverage purporting to show that escalating violence in Iraq has the country spiraling out of control, civilian death statistics complied by Rep. Steve King, R-IA, indicate that Iraq actually has a lower civilian violent death rate than Washington, D.C.

Appearing with Westwood One radio host Monica Crowley on Saturday, King said that the incessantly negative coverage of the Iraq war prompted him to research the actual death numbers.

"I began to ask myself the question, if you were a civilian in Iraq, how could you tolerate that level of violence," he said. "What really is the level of violence?"

Using Pentagon statistics cross-checked with independent research, King said he came up with an annualized Iraqi civilian death rate of 27.51 per 100,000.

While that number sounds high - astonishingly, the Iowa Republican discovered that it's significantly lower than a number of major American cities, including the nation's capital.

"It's 45 violent deaths per 100,000 in Washington, D.C.," King told Crowley.

Other American cities with higher violent civilian death rates than Iraq include:

    # Detroit - 41.8 per 100,000

    # Baltimore - 37.7 per 100,000

    # Atlanta - 34.9 per 100,000

    # St. Louis - 31.4 per 100,000

The American city with the highest civilian death rate was New Orleans before Katrina - with a staggering 53.1 deaths per 100,000 - almost twice the death rate in Iraq.

I'm not fond of Bush, but man the press attacks him unfairly. Every one talks about how bad it is in Iraq, yet my Marine buddies who email me from Iraq tell me everything is fine there and while they keep a high level of security, otherwise they surely aren't living in fear.

I'd like to see the original numbers how this rate was constructed. It doesn't sound right.

couple of thoughts, no doubt the rate is for the whole country. Large areas are relatively stable, but how about comparing Baghdad and Washington DC.

Also obviously it excludes the new Iraqi army and probably the police from those figures, a lot of these people were civilians just a few months ago.

Anyone with a brain knows that Iraq isnt as bad as the press paints it out to be, but the press has a political agenda, on both sides of course.

Sound pretty retarded to compara an entire country's death rate to single cities.

It is even less than Dixie Road in Dade county..... drive-by shootings...

Iraq is fine ... Tell that to the 2500 US soldiers ( well no, to their families ) and to the 50 iraqis that die DAILY ....

                              What a fuck up !

And Afghhanistan is picking up.. In 5 - 6 years, your puppet dictator will be kicked out in exile, and the Talibans will be back in force ... just a repeat of Iran and all you other implants ...
I know that Asspimple is stoopid ... As he says, it is a FACT !

But I can't figure out how he can breathe or type , at the same time ....

No, I've never heard of a car bomb going off in Washington DC. However, I surely don't hear about how twenty gang bangers got killed in fourteen different incidents in the past twenty-four hours in Washington DC either.

Way more (military) then this die in the US each year from sucides and accidents so this number is being fed to you by the press with the body counts since about 100 or so three years ago.

Add to this the fact that 100% of our military are paid to fight anywhere they are told to fight and also 100% volunteered for it !

That's because all the civilians in Iraq from coalition nations are guarded by guys with machine guns. And all the Iraq civilians are considered "insurgents" so their deaths don't figure into that number.

This BS might have been true the first thousand times it was posted over 2 years ago before the insurgency had geared up.

If you believe what has happened in recent months in Iraq is in any way comparable with Washington DC you are a certified loon.

Do a search and you'll see the numbers are wrong. Hell just crunch the numbers from iraqibodycount.org and you'll see they're way off.

Also obviously it excludes the new Iraqi army and probably the police from those figures, a lot of these people were civilians just a few months ago.

That number is badly outdated. Using the most recent 2004 data, the violent casualty rate in D.C. is 35.8 deaths per 100,000."

Last time I checked Washington D.C. or for that matter any US city you want to use to prove a point doesn't have 1000's of armed soldiers standing on the street corners keeping the peace. The reason most of Iraq is stable is because we have these troops there and the isurgents are only strong enough to hit certain areas so the focus their attacts. Take of these soldiers out of the country and then tell me how peaceful it is.
