I use the same ploy. However, I change it to a more direct mode. I just say "Do you speak English?" That usually stops the conversation. Now, if they DO speak English, I let them get their corporate name out and then I say "NO. I've had problems with them" and that's usally it. If they continue, I ask a simple question, "What part of NO did you not understand?" Then, I hang up.

Some of the more eager types that keep calling me back, I hit "redial" and when they answer, I lay the phone down and ride off and go have coffee, all the while leaving the phone on the table. You see, I originated the call with the redial. Their line won't be usable again until I hang up......which may be in a couple of hours!

It's hard to understand (or even consider) that a country, butted up against the most technologically advanced nation in the world, ends up holding direly to it's 3rd world status! AST can also vouch for that.

The "easy way" is unheard of down here. Even when you show them an easier way to do something, tomorrow, they'll return and do it the same old way they've always done it. Just moved into a newly built house and it was a nightmare, getting everything done the way I wanted, instead of how the architect wanted. Example: A "flow-thru" water heater (you know, AST) rated at 7.5 liters a minute hooked to a pressurized system, putting out 21 liters a minute. And they didin't know why I didn't have hot water. SHIT, PEOPLE!!! I put in a 190 liter reservior heater. The type we're familiar with.

And, AST is correct in saying he speaks Mexican. Mexican is different from Spanish, by a long shot. I've tried the Spanish learning tapes and it's a no-go. I learn more by just going out to coffee every day.

I've been trying to get cable TV, So, they're running a special, $150.00 MXP for installation and the first month free. So, yea. I want that. I go sign up and pay my $150.00 (about $13.50 USD). After 4 weeks, I still don't have cable. It's not possible says the field supervisor, the "jefe". We're 90 meters from the pole and they can run 75 max. Go get your money back..

So I go to get my money back. They DO NOT want to give it back. No matter what the field jefe says, the office jefe says they WILL bring my cable .. tomorrow .. between 1:00 and 6:00 so be home .. (for the 9th time).

Well, I still don't have cable.

Next time I see the Cablemas guy in his company VW bug, I'm gonna slip him $100 to run my line. I WILL get cable, I just have to grease the correct spots ;)

I love Mexico. I love the fact that if I don't want to work, I can have my toes in the sand and my feet in the Caribbean in 2 minutes and monitor my sales and e-mails from my Dell Axim hitting my wireless router on the top floor.

Or ... I can walk 5 minutes down the beach, grab a cabanna with a sand floor where the whiney tourists and crybaby "expats" never get to see, eat shrimp and squid and drink beer and tequila all afternoon for about ten bucks.

If you pass out, it's ok. You can stay there on the sand. No one cares.
