Is there any DOWNSIDE to hosting your Members Videos on a different Server/Domain...

I hope I do not get flamed for posting a actual business question here and not the usual BS, hehe.

Is there any DOWNSIDE to hosting your Members Videos on a different Server and Domain than the actual index page of the members site?

So for example, is there any downside to the member videos being on and hosted on www.siteA.com and the actual members page being on www.siteB.com? And they would be hosted on different servers as well.

Any hotlinking issues with this? Anything else that might pose a problem?

If the site is setup right there should be no issues ... have done this many times.

None as long as the config's correct.

Hate to beat a dead horse, but like the other posts...if it is configured the right way there won't be any issues at all. Just make sure the people who set up know what they are doing.

Have a duplicate of you password file on the other server and make members sign in again. That will stop hotlinking.

this is one solution, but it is cumbersome because let's say you have many domains and each of the domains share different folders of appropriate videos on a different server.

i think what's best is an easy, hands off solution, that is fairly bulletproof---(only members get access, and hotlinkers stay out)

the original poster has a valid question.

there are some efficiencies to having all of your vids on a different server optimized for high traffic load, and because video files are big you don't have to have redundant videos on your other "marketing" server.

so you create multiple servers----"marketing" servers optimized for running scripts, etc and getting signups, and content servers optimized for delivering the member content.

there is a pretty good solution for this. and it involves antihotlinking.com and a custom setup.

i'm sure there are other setups that could work, but AHL is working good for me (it is not the standard AHL setup---it is a custom setup configured just for this situation)

                suggest, contact Max at AHL.

and i might also add, you want your setup done so hotlink attempts are redirected to a "selling" page of your choice.

in this way, you welcome hotlink attempts the same as you welcome 404 traffic.

There is no downside at all, but some members could get confused. Rather than have www.siteA.com go to www.siteB.com, why not just members.siteA.com ?

But in any case its not a problem.

ok guys, sounds like it can be done, but there is some complexities involved, which is something I hate. Now I am wondering what the BEST method is in the first place? To host the videos on the same server and domain as where the paysite tour and members index is, or to spread them out like I stated in this thread.

Here is another thread about that exact question, so if you have any opinions on that, please put in your 2 cents. Thank you! http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?p=6748577
