What if you dont have pie tin? can u just put a beer can in it, or what else can u use to place the beer on it so it doesnt fall over?
And what seasonings do you guys use on the outside??
Whatever you place it on is to catch drippings and prevent fat flare ups.
The grill itself will hold a can in place no problem. You can always arrange your coals in a circle around the base of the chicken so that under the chicken has no coals (assuming you use coals).
The chicken will actually sit by itself if you adjust its legs some, though I highly reccomend that you put a small amount of foil over the wing tips and parts of the legs or they will cook way faster than the rest.
Seasoning is easy. Though I personally feel you should place them under the skin instead of on them. Salt is good, pepper is ok but can burn, garlic powder, etc. Or get a grill rub or make your own.

i use propane and this is what i did before I got a holder. prep the chicken,
place on the upper rack of your grill and under it place some tinfoil with the edges bent into a lip , if your grill's lid doesnt have enough clearence, you can set it up on the bottom. just place more tin foil under it
set your burners to low and cook for an hour and 15-20 mins.. the juice should run clear when you cut in with a knife.
however, removing the can is the real trick. usually a 2 person job, one person holds the chicken and the other takes the bbq tongs and rips the can out the bottom
It went great and was the best damn chicken I ever had, followed a recipe I found on google.
People coming over today and 2 more going on the grill
Thanks American perv!

Get a 4-5 lb chicken. Remove giblets and fat from cavity and rinse inside and out with cool water. Take a 12 oz can of beer and drink half of it(I also use some of the beer to soak the wood chips in). Using a church key style can open, pop holes all the way around the top of the can. Fill can back to the top with chopped onions, garlic, spices(your preference) and some BBQ sauce. Keeping level, insert beer can into chicken cavity, open end of beer facing up towards neck. prepare grill for indirect grilling( drip pan in middle, coals on either side). When hot, stand up chicken on beer can and pull out the legs to make a tripod. Fold wings back behind neck area. Add wood chips and cover grill. You need a high dome grill, I use a Weber kettle. Cook for 1- 1 1/2 hours until done.
It's very tasty and I recommend making 2 at a time because it will get eaten up quick.
Be very careful when taking off the grill, use tongs and a spatula and don't get boiling beer on yourself.
Enjoy!
