I think serial killers kill because they are driven by psychopathic urges. Simply killing someone with a gun would probably not satisfy those urges. Getting as close and personal with their victims do. Like the previous posts of Dahmer drilling holes into victims' heads; that's about as personal as you can get. Other methods such as skinning, raping corpses, eating body parts, whatever... The serial killer gets as close as possible because that close contact satisfies an intense, personal urge that causes them to do what they do. Think of the natural urge to fuck and how close and personal that act is when fulfilled. Maybe serial killers need to fulfill something just like that, but in a fucking sick, twisted and morbid way *shrug*...
