And Hitler had that perfected to a T - it's got nothing to do with the Holocaust - in the late 1930s he was all about expanding under the auspices of bringing ethnic Germans back into the fold. Czech, Poland, Austria, etc. And it totally worked.

So I don't think Godwin's Law applies here, in the 20th century Hitler was the one most known for this strategy - no sensationalism needed.

Georgia *may* have shot first in that war, but I don't believe for a second Russia wasn't doing everything they could to destabilize and encourage a pro-Russian separatist movement in Abkhazia and Ossetia. Which Georgia fell for hook line and sinker.

I should revise that. "It worked" in Czech (Sudentenland) and Austria, when they rolled into Poland the Allies declared war which Hitler did not actually expect. He had no real interest in war with the British and in any event wanted to build up a few more years (I think 1943 was the plan?) before the big fight.

That's why shit like this Ukraine deal is so dangerous - you have no idea when events will outstrip the various leaders' plans and snowball with a life of their own.

Russia did much more than give out sweets in Cuba. I recall a near nuclear war over the subject actually.

But I'm not interested in this superpower vs superpower crap - I was highly against the US going into Iraq, interfering in Syria, Libya, etc, or Vietnam for that matter, and I'm highly against Russia doing so here. Sure, the US wasn't blameless in Cuba during the Crisis and definitely not after. To say nothing of Central America. Eventually we go in circles talking about this tho, all I'm saying is it's bad for big countries to impose their will on small countries and hopefully Russia doesn't go any further.
