I use google a lot for my work and now I find myself straining more for whatever reason with the new design. Sky is not falling, but yeah.. this did not enhance my user experience.

Nope, as webmasters many of us do actually have to use Google for testing as that's what the vast majority of our surfers use. Trust me, at this point if I could leave it behind (except for Maps, that's pretty damn cool if a little 1984) I would.
