I remember the REAL gold old days. When porn was on VHS, was minimum $49.95 a tape ($69.95 for gay tapes), and every customer came up to the counter with at least 2 tapes.

When we would get 200 copies of the new Hustler each month and they were sold out in a week. We constantly had to raise our order each month.

When we had a sign in every store stating that there was a 15 minute browsing limit. Don't get me wrong, it was mostly for show, but if we knew you were just gonna spend 2 hours looking at tape boxes and not buy anything you were shown the door. That was called protecting your content.

When sex toys were made to break. I know, it's shitty, but every vibrator we sold, irregardless of whether it was Doc Johnson, Cal Exotics, etc. was guaranteed to break in a month or 2 tops. Of course there are no returns in adult bookstores, so you knew the typical woman was good for buying several vibrators a year.

When we would get our UPS shipments every Monday and Friday, always around 2 PM, and guaranteed there were at least 10 customers that would show up specifically to linger around the counters for us to open the boxes. I can't tell you how few new tapes/DVD's would make it to the floor, because someone would snap it up as soon as we pulled it out of the box. I constantly had to rush to check something into the system so someone could buy it.

Back in 2002 sales were already stating to deteriorate at the stores, especially magazine sales. We started having to send copies of magazines back to our warehouse, which was unheard of in years prior. We still had really good VHS and DVD sales and rentals, though, especially to guys in their late 40's and up. The older customers were definitely the last to go, as they just didn't trust the internet yet, or even have internet access...
