Penguin 3 case study

Here's an interesting series of case studies using a Link spam network.

The guy who ran the case study used a TIERED LINK system. 3 layers. Basically, you use web 2.0, profile links, forum links (xrumer type links) on the outer layer, 'clean it up' as it hits layer 1 and layer 1's 'clean' links boost the MONEY SITE - the site where your affiliate links are.

Verdict: Longtail strategy survives Penguin 4.1 BUT.... killed by Penguin 3.0

Here are the case studies and post-morterm

http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/tut...oogle-updates/

Post-mortem: http://noobwarrior.com/spam-site-dea...ive-spam-site/

WHAT DOES THIS TEACH US ABOUT PENGUIN 3.0?

This post from last year (re Penguin 2.0) is VERY INSIGHTFUL-notice the the use of the word 'upstream'

http://mattsbackpack.co.uk/penguin-2...lding-trouble/

Quote:
3:13 ? ?We?re also looking at some ways to go upstream to deny the value to link spammers. People who spam links in various ways. We?ve got some nice ideas on trying to make sure that that becomes less effective.?

This is really the key bit for me. Google are fully aware that tiered link building is being used very effectively to game its search results at the moment. It makes sense that they would be looking for ways to tackle that. To me, Cutts? use of the word ?upstream? is particularly telling.

If Google go more ?upstream? when looking at your websites backlinks, what are they guna find? Are they still guna find good quality links from good quality sites, just like you would naturally expect? Or are they going to find that your links are being ?powered up? by a layer of spammy, crappy links that you wouldn?t want anywhere near your money site?
Check 3:13 of this video

Some guy on BHW was saying that his charity site, with no monetization and no dubious backlinks, was wiped out by the latest Penguin. Which proves nothing, but goes to show how ridiculous it all is.

I'm impressed by the PBN guys who manage to withstand these updates. Wish I had their stomach for the fight.

I meant the case study survived Panda 4.1 (the longtails did) but got PIMP SLAPPED by Penguin 3

looks like Google's factoring in UPSTREAM link sources.

What's next? DROPPED DOMAIN (WITH PR) UPDATE?

Kinda makes you wonder: if they are willing to go through all that trouble, why not just build legit sites? Google's putting the hurt on churn and burn since updates are rolling out almost quarterly. Maybe the pace will only pick up. What's next? The dropped domain update?

DamageX sorry, I meant PANDA 4.1. I posted the correction above. The case study I mentioned was a GUEST POST on Matt's blog. It was from the dude behind Noobwarrior. It tested Panda's ability to bust PLR-driven sites that only had original content on the homepage.

Then the guy who made the study shouldn't quit his day job either. Panda and Penguin have pretty much fuck all to do with each other, other than being nuts and bolts in the Google machinery. The former is an on-page algo, the latter is an off-page one. So it shouldn't take a genius (which he's obviously far from being) to figure out that you won't get a Panda slap for your backlinking structure.

I agree that this is a total garbage, when people suck at marketing and SEO they start teaching others how to do it and monetize this way...

However your logic sucks, on-page update has everything to do with backlinks, if the sites you're getting backlinks from get hit from on-page update then you get less juice from your backlinks...

Normally I'd agree with you. But that's assuming that Panda/Penguin are penalties, which in reality they're not. They're just filters, which are run periodically to re-sort the index, so to speak. It is still unclear whether a demotion in the SERP's, due to getting slapped by either animal, lessens the value of the outgoing links on those sites.

You do realize that even if Google has incredibly huge resources, they're still limited, right? Take any little thing that is factored in the algo, multiply it with hundreds of billions of pages, then with hundreds of daily crawls, on average, for each site, then multiply it with... I hope you get the picture. For every little thing they must take into account, on a global rate, the amount of complexity increases and demands more and more processing power.

Besides, even if that wasn't the case, just as any human-made algo can be cheated, so does human-written code have bugs and limitations. Think of it as of surgically removing a cancer tumor. Either you remove all the cancer cells, while also removing some healthy ones in the process. Or you choose to remove no healthy cells, which leaves a bunch of cancer cells intact to keep spreading. In Google's case, they've really been fucking up at doing either one well.

those are hacked Wordpress sites, domains are owned by different persons, hosted on diff. IPs/hosts etc.
