Here's an example of the inevitability of death hitting you square in the face....

Your country has been invaded and is being conquered. (I don't care what country you live in, if you think it can't happen then you haven't studied history)
You have been labeled a security risk by the conquering army and have been imprisoned.
The next morning you and a few dozen of your neighbors and friends are taken out to a wall and lined up, and a line of soldiers raise their rifles. You know you're about to die.

Question: Do you cry like a little girl? Or do you hold your head high and go out with.... what's that word I'm trying to think of here?.... um..... oh yeah, DIGNITY?


Think about it.

And while you're at it think about the millions of people in history who faced that exact situation. Some were asked to renounce their faith, some were simply shot with no other options presented to them.

Again, dignity in death has nothing to do with pissing or shitting.

Fact is there are people who have jobs to clean that shit up. Who are we to begrudge them a paycheque? :D

Besides, what's wrong with FEAR of dying? Most people live life in FEAR anyway, right? Fear of rejection. Fear of not getting enough attention from others. Fear of being found weak or wanting. Fear is a fact of life. The list is endless. It defines us as much as our dreams define our better nature. Death is just another thing to fear in a life spent in the shadow of mortality.

After 15 years of working in a hospital I long ago came to realize that most people don't. Has nothing to do with pissing and shitting, it has everything to do with how you take it in your final days/hours. Believe me when I say a lot of people cry and whine and whale and fuss until their last breath, like after living for 75 or 80+ years death is still what, unexpected?

These people seem to live their whole lives avoiding the fact that death is one thing and one thing only -- INEVITABLE.

Accepting it with grace is what I think the term die with dignity really means. Because no amount of crying and moaning is going to stop it from happening.

She was in the hospital for months, was getting poked and prodded, and she finally just said "fuck this". (She was 81, Polish, and strong as a fucking ox.) She walked out of the hospital and went home. She spend the next ten months working on her garden, which is something she always loved. She died with dignity doing something she loved.
