That's an odd question. FTP is a terrible protocol for backup unless the client is really smart. Orion Data Safe uses FTP, though, if the choice of network protocol is that important to you:

Most likely you'll get a better answer by asking about the best way to back up whatever it is you want to back up, rather than randomly selecting an outdated wire protocol.

In other words, that question sounds a lot like "what's the best car with a 0.38" spark plug gap"? Why would you choose such a random implementation detail as your first criterium?
