People love a hero, mate. It's already been explained that the Alexa drop was caused by regional Paypal switching from www.paypal.com/au to www.paypal-austalia.com.au and similar regional sites around the world.
Don't make something out of nothing, all the Alexa stats show is that Paypal.com has dropped, it doesn't explain why and I have just explained why above.
Also, Paypal were investigating some of these sites long before Stop File Lockers began, in fact a couple of the bigger ones have revealed they were talking to Paypal from the beginning of the year.
We can't claim credit for some of the bigger sites, like mediafire or deposit files because those sites were already under active investigation by Paypal it seems. I don't know this for sure, but there is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest this is true.
Let's not kid ourselves, Stop File Lockers has made some noise, yes, but I think it's been just a case of timing in some cases.
ACIUF have been sending reports to Paypal on many of these sites for months, as have other anti-piracy groups. I think the sensationalism of the "One man Army" is ridiculous when lot's of people and organizations are involved in this effort.
Copy Control will be important to fight piracy, it's a tool the whole industry and those outside the industry can use and it will probably be very effective, however let's not kid ourselves here - there are other large organizations fighting these battles as well.
Whatever the case, it wasn't until you started that all of this started to happen. Thus the fact that you are in the spot light. People have been trying to take out billing to these sites for a while, but within a few days of you saying you were going to do it, it happened. It could be that you were the straw to break the camel's back. Or it could be that you just hit the right nerve and contacted the right people. Bottom line is... the job is getting done and making progress. Kudos to all involved.Comment

Actually, "we" are not doing anything. I do not follow you around, and troll you or your business. If you were not constantly seeking my attention in multiple threads, I would not even notice nor acknowledge your existence in the first place.
As for your other remarks, I am not sure who you think you are? I am guessing yet another digital gangsta. Your dis/approval or you firing your "warning shots" across my bow is the equivalent of the local fry cook telling me they are pissed @ the drive thru window. I wouldn't care about them anymore than I care about you.
Regarding the rest of what you claim I was supposedly telling AK about this and that. None of that is true. However, as we have seen from your recently past, that was never the point in the first place. It was just to take some smear shot @ myself. Which is fine.
That being said, how about you take your little pissing bullshit to some other BF thread and cry about not getting enough attention there. This thread is about AK, and his efforts on this file locker deal. It does not need to be derailed by your nonsense.
Mkay, thanx, bye.

So, basically taking paypal down for these systems, it's not only about taking down their payment processor to accept new premium membership signups, right?
BUT also their whole system of paying UPLOADERS that accounts for most of the content, using their affiliate referral system.
I mean, if you take down paypal for them, you only prevent them for getting new signups in the premium system, or also you prevent them from paying all their UPLOADERS, $25 for every 1000 downloads?Last edited by VenusBlogger; 07-12-2012, 08:29 AM.Comment

Basically their funds get frozen for 180 days - so no paying hosts, uploaders or anyone with that money they have sitting in paypal. So, basically taking paypal down for these systems, it's not only about taking down their payment processor to accept new premium membership signups, right?

That's a great start. I suppose it's not necessarily file lockers that we want to kill but piracy itself that should receive the death blow. However I'd think that once the file lockers see the guidelines for compliance they'll be forced to admit that we are eliminating their sole purpose of existence. Perhaps Paypal will eventually see this too and just blanket ban all file lockers (with a few exceptions).I think that rather than individual negotiations with each file locker, it'll be better to post an official guideline for all of them to follow with the list of recommendations as to how to become compliant and to avoid becoming a target for Copy Control.
That will also look good public relations wise, because it'll make it clear what kind of sites we're after, and that we're also giving them a chance of changing the ways they operate and not simply slaying the frak out of all of them. That will be a tough guideline of course, because it will be meant to really stop piracy at file lockers and not simply implementing some cosmetic changes such as to disallow content of a few selected copyright holders to be illegally "shared", and many of them will not be able to follow because piracy is their only source of income. But at least we'll give them a chance which always looks good in the eyes of public opinion, and also it'll help to further build relationships with serious organizations such as Paypal and VISA/MC.
This guideline could look as following:
1. Follow DMCA law to the letter (that includes having an effective repeat infringer policy).
2. Monitor the incoming traffic on a daily basic, and if visitors from known piracy sites (see the list) are noticed, investigate immediatly - ban posters who post there and remove all files that were uploaded by these posters. You can also block traffic from those confirmed piracy sites through htaccess file.
3. Implement standard technical measures to prevent infringements, such as MD5 and DFP. Do not interfere with them.
4. Establish and implement a reasonable and transparent policy for copyright holders to apply for instant take down accounts.
5. Stopping adult content piracy is not enough. We support all legit creative industries, and we'll still report your site if it allows copyrighted movies, tv shows, software or music to be "shared" illegally. Cleaning up your acts means stopping piracy altogether, not only adult content piracy.
6. .....
If you agree with the idea I can put a draft together and post it for discussion.Comment

They hide behind DMCA, saying its not their content etc. i get that, but where does it say their users have to be anonymous?
Force them to keep record of all their users (full name, address etc), regardless of if they pay them or not.
and if one of them upload pirated content and get caught, their personal details will be handed over.
If they truly dont want to take responsibility of what is uploaded to them, then the responsibility have to fall on the uploaders.Comment

How on earth have DF still got paypal? even if it is a new account they switched in surely PP can close this one by now. If they decided their old account should be closed this should be an immediate decision. Same for bitshare really.?Comment

This has to be a given and should be ranked number 1. These file lockers can see every referral link and know where their traffic is coming from. They aren?t stupid and know what sites support them. Take the 5% that these sites webmasters make for every buy they send, and those sites will dry up.2. Monitor the incoming traffic on a daily basic, and if visitors from known piracy sites (see the list) are noticed, investigate immediatly - ban posters who post there and remove all files that were uploaded by these posters. You can also block traffic from those confirmed piracy sites through htaccess file.Comment

Many are already using link anonymizers, or even adf.ly so theres no point in looking at the traffic sources.
Name. Address. All that's needed. End of.

Yes but if you can't see where your links are coming from you can't pay your forum owners
Several large forum owners rely on money from these lockers to pay their server fees and such.

Let's not forget that every designer now does tube sites in portfolio. Any different then a filelocker? Filelocker is simply a bigger version of a tube site.
gimme is probably the worst at PR then I don't know... but she is just doing what every other designer is doing. Don't forget about that.Comment

Eric, all of the information Robbie posted is public info. Stop trying to protect that worthless shit stain. It boggles the mind why you let that bastard post here anyway. "Where the INDUSTRY meets" is GFY's motto. Not "where the PIRATES meet to throw dirt on those in the industry."
Perhaps you should change the motto in the header.

Just checking in everyone.
It's been a busy day full of meetings, we see FileFactory has stopped using Paypal, this is an announcement that we didn't think we could make until Saturday but it seems events have pre-empted us.
We have a number of people in the collaboration system now, feeling their way around.
Anyone else who wants to be included should let me know.
I'll be back online in about 15 hours.Comment

Extabit found themselves a new billing company - it is called i-Koruna, never heard of it before. And they also accept VISA cards themselves now, through the payment form available at their site..

Nice to see you (or someone else) got 1hostclick's paypal suspended. They were pretty much illegal & definitely hosted a *lot* of equally illegal content.
As for filehosts becoming 'compliant', well, most of them will die off without the ability to pay uploaders. The only reason they have any traffic at all is because they pay uploaders, they essentially pay until they become *the* place for content. Once nobody uploads to them anymore, they will not have any income or any traffic, compliant or not.
I think a lot of them will begin using obscure, shady payment processors now, but I assume they will be more difficult to have suspended/removed.Experienced Programmer - ICQ: 601958502

Well so far Paypal has been the most difficult to deal with of all processing companies - due to their enormous size, they were able to absorb whatever problems came along with processing for those file locker sites. Chargebacks, refunds, absurd amount of DMCAs and AUP violation complaints etc. You couldn't even complain to VISA because it was useless - obviosuly they would never suspend Paypal's merchant account because it's too big. Well, in theory that was maybe possible, but only in theory.
But those smaller billing companies are basically nobodies for VISA and they'll easily suspend their merchant accounts if annoyed enough by a steady stream of DMCAs and other complaints. Those smaller billers know that damn well and react nervously for each even a minor bitchslap from VISA. I bet many of them do not even fully understand yet what kind of "clients" those filehosts are and what amount of trouble they bring with them. They will however realize that soon enough and many of the new billing options that those filehosts found after paypal terminations will cease to operate too.
As a matter of fact, none of the file lockers managed to maintain an account with a billing company for a long period of time so far, or their own merchant accounts, after their paypal account was terminated. Amount of abuse is so huge it seems that nobody except for paypal can sustain it in the long run. Oron, filesmonster, uploaded.to, all lost whatever processing account they were able to find pretty fast. Whether the same will be true for all other filehosts now that most of them lost paypal remains to be seen, but I think it is only a matter of time until Visa and MC will terminate them all..
