    $40 Million of Bitcoin stolen

If the suspect is telling the truth.

He claims to have "hacked" bitcoin and can steal from your bitcoins without you
    knowing.

Damn, I'm glad you told me about this. I put mine under my mattress this morning. I think they're safe now.

It will be funny if it goes to court - 'He stole 40 million, sorry 42 million, now 37 million wait a minute it's 40 million again'...

this is a simple address replacement trojan - not "hacking bitcoin". and its probably not even true that he stole all that.

He also told investigators ?he had been hired by numerous foreign governments to develop penetration software.?
The hacker told investigators he wasn?t able to cash out his bitcoin without drawing attention to himself; he also said he was planning on hiring a private jet to take him to England right before his arrest.
Sounds like this guy is having fun with the cops. Probably saw them get excited after seeing TOR on his computer and wanted see how far he could take it.

Hackers have stolen more than $5 million in virtual currency from Bitstamp, a major bitcoin exchange, forcing the company to freeze user accounts, suspend trades and block deposits.
The Slovenia-based company said Monday that fraudsters made off with 19,000 bitcoins a day prior. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the theft or how it happened.

                                                https://www.technologyreview.com/s/5...n-in-bitcoins/

On February 10, 2014, a Bitcoin exchange called MtGox announced it had lost some 850,000 bitcoins, of which 750,000 belonged to its customers. At the time, bitcoins were trading at $827 apiece, making the value of the loss equivalent to $620 million.

That?s a significant shortfall by anyone?s standards. But MtGox had an explanation. In a press release on that day, it announced it had been the victim of a fraud in which the bitcoins had been stolen by hackers.

The fraud, said the company, was a result of a problem known as a transaction malleability bug. This allows malicious users to transfer bitcoins into their accounts while making MtGox think the transfer had failed. Consequently, MtGox repeated these transactions so that the total amount was transferred twice.

Did I say "hacked bitcoin"? I said it "WILL eventually happen". Perhaps if you took the time to educate yourself instead of being a forum troll, you will understand what i meant when i stated "it WILL eventually happen" because if major bitcoin exchanges with heavy security can get hacked, its a matter of time when hackers find ways to hack it

there is a big difference between "bitcoin being hacked" and "some idiot keeps all his bitcoin on an exchange that gets hacked and loses it all". or "some idiot keeps all his bitcoin in a wallet that touches the internet, gets hacked (or has malware) and loses it all". or "some greedy idiot sends all his bitcoin to an ICO address that was from a hacked ICO website and loses it all because he thinks it will 10X in a week".

seems there a few "some idiots" in this thread.

No wonder guys on the board call you out as a forum troll on more than one occasion. If you think storing Bitcoin in your wallet is the safest thing on the planet, man you are naive or stupid, maybe both. You are storing something virtual "digital" in a wallet which is basically a software. Any number of factors can compromise the security of it, as someone above stated, malware or trojan is the most likely scenario. Ever of heard of keystroke copying? Even your super duper long weird bitcoin password can be compromised if you typed it and a keystroke trojan is recording your keystrokes when you type in your password. Take it one step further, if your wallet software Bither or whatever you are using is hacked from software side, you are even more vulnerable.

Bitcoin paper wallets are riskier from an online PC. Malware or Trojans on the PC may be able to steal your paper wallet keys. Even if you generate paper wallets securely, they are still vulnerable to loss and theft.
