we never had a problem with strongbox. As it works on IP & geo, IŽd have thought the geo would pick up on mobile

We use proxypass, we had to switch to embed browser login fields for it to work with mobile and tablets (this works with Apple shit too) also.
Let me know if you need help setting this up, I can also customize those login pages. alex at ryulion com

Having a custom-built solution may make the most sense though I've never heard anyone have bad things to say about ProxyPass and CHMOD's offerings.
