scammer ripped my paypal acc for 650 USD and paypal does Not seem to be helpful

It was late Friday night when I notification from my paypal app that I "You sent a payment of 38,484.17 RUB to Кузьмин Яков ([email protected])" google translate says the name is "Jacob Kuzmin" and he is a non-us verified member...

I opened my paypal and tried to reverse the thing, but it was not an option. So I filed a dispute - which was rejected a ~day later saying that my account is 'healthy' and "If you're unhappy with your purchase, we encourage you to work with the seller to find a resolution."

It was tough and tricky, but I filed a dispute again during the weekend, including all the info from the transaction I could. I was told again that case is closed, everything seems to be fine - except me missing half of my paypal balance...

While I was struggling with the first dispute, I got another email, from paxum: "This email confirms that you sent 55.00 USD to [email protected] " which is a nice scam again... Of course I changed pw on all my major accounts, and pimped my paxum security settings [they are WAY better than paypal's btw]

Today my colleagues noticed that our office NAS has a folder where there are lots of strange files: the following file in thousands of sub-folders: "DECRYPT_INFORMATION.html" and after some research we found the neat Hermes ransomware on my machine, which infected a part of one of the NASes we have. Still struggling with removing it..

Any tips on how to make paypal more secure or prevent this from happening again or a suggestion what to do now? I did contact PayPal again to fight the rejected dispute, and now waiting for a new reply..

...sigh...

These things you should call PayPal about. Takes a little time on phone but the fraud staff is on point and us/uk based.

Sorry to hear

Use two factor mobile phone auth on all bank accounts. It's also available for Paypal, they'll send you an SMS code that you need to type in on login.

He is not in the US do they have some international phone customer service?
If it is a dispute contact the seller first and send the documentation proving that you tried to paypal and paxum -- that is normal dispute/chargeback resolution procedure per VISA-Net rules.

Do you use Windows with paypal?
What operating system -- sounds like an exploit/hack or possibly phishing.

If you got phished and your IP made the charges then learn to read the headers on emails that are from any financial source. Always go the the bank (or others) website and login --NEVER from any email link.

It is also possible that some vendors you are paying, or that are storing your data insecurely, got their servers hacked or compromised by insider fraud.

Close those paypal and paxum accounts and create new ones -- that the only way to guarantee that if some exploit was involved your accounts won't get hit again.

Good luck getting your money back -- it will be an uphill battle.

another Windows user success story!

That complicates things.

Well that Windows cost you a pretty penny. NAS is not the issue, delete and reformat -- install a back up image that is clean -- but if the Workstations are Windows -- well you are simply fucked.

You may need to reformat EVERY drive if that is the case -- I hope your backups are clean.

Thank You All for all the suggestions, really appreciate it

I'll definitely call PayPal, that seems to be the way.
Meanwhile paxum replied too, it is funny:
"The account you mentioned was already flagged and it will be kept under observation"
WUT? Observation? Why can't they auto-reverse all his transactions? Do they have a limit and fuck around with scammers only if they do more than 5/10 scams a week/month/year? LOL

It can be that the ransomware infection is connected with these issues, I have no idea, never been in such a situation.

Frankly, we [my crew of 4] are not using any anti-virus/anti-spyware whatsoever .. never had issues..

You had a keylogger on your PC.

Contact your Bank and ask them to do a chargeback on that paypal transaction (unless you were dumb enough to keep balance in your paypal). Reissue your creditcards.

Gratz. You got hit by fucking russians.

This

Two different companies I worked with, both tech type companies, that after I came on board I found they weren't running any protection and I asked why?

The answer in both cases was, "We have never had an issue". My reply to both was "How do you know?".

Once we scanned the various boxes we found all sorts of issues, most pretty benign but still shit that should not be there.

You don't use anti-virus?

Holy Fuck!

Your NAS got infected most likely while somebody who got infected was connected to it. So their system should be showing that same file. One of your 4 isn't telling the whole story about how they infected the NAS.

As for your PayPal and Paxum issues... Did you use the same password for both? Did you use the same password as you did with some other kind of account such as an affiliate program?

A little lesson for everyone: A good portion of affiliate programs have been hacked by hackers who don't deface things. Instead they hide and hide well. They steal your whales and attribute them to their accounts. They have been doing such things for years. They usually work in groups with anywhere from 2 to 30 members. They have a strict code of laws. Occasionally one goes rogue and does something like this and the others hate that kind of shit. Why get the FBI involved in a banking scam when you could just keep siphoning off whales and have a nice living in a country where you can live like a king on $8K per month?

Good luck!

i use avira + do some routinely spyware check.
"i never had any problem" is almost never true, you mostly just don't know about it.

rule #1 for PC/Win users: ALWAYS unplug net cable from your pc when installing windows. that's when most viruses hit your system. When it's up, plug it in, and first thing to put on an antivirus. THEN get chrome :D

We all started to use something: avast, panda or something else.
The reason we haven't used anything is that what we noticed is that we never had any issues until such things got installed. Sound like a conspiracy theory LOL... But for real: we are adults, we do know where to click and where not, and can determine is something is suspicious or not.
It seems that my own office computer was hacked only, and I have actually no idea how. But learned the lesson no doubt.

Most likely hacking my computer made the asshat able to do something with my paxum and paypal.

I am calm because this is just money "lost" - but hopefully it will be reversed to me sooner or later. The only person I can blame is myself, so even if the money is getting lost than I can't/won't be mad at no one..

He installed a keylogger on your PC.

Then got logins/passwords to everything (emails / paypal / paxum etc)

Great idea
