Los Angeles county high school graduation rate - 61%

I just saw this on CNN. http://www.countyhealthrankings.org

You can go there and they will rank you country within your state for overall health. I was looking at my county and saw that the high school graduation rate was 75%. That seemed awful to me so I looked at a few other places. LA county is at 61%, Seattle is at 77%, Chicago is at 61%, Pittsburgh is at 83%. Miami is at 54%.

Some pretty scary numbers. You look at some of these numbers an see the future of this country slowly winding down the toilet bowl.

I would like to see that too. I'm interested to see if it has changed much. It seems to me, and maybe I'm just misunderstanding the system, that it is easier to graduate now than it was 20 years ago. My nephew is in high school and his freshman year he took 15 classes (5 per trimester) and failed 10 of them. He only had to make one of them up. He failed another 4 his sophomore year and yet they tell him he is on target to graduate without making them up or going to summer school.

When I was in high school in the 80's. If you failed any core class you had to retake it. You could fail a few electives and still graduate, but the number was maybe 1 per year. If you failed more than 4-5 classes total over the 4 years of high school you were not graduating unless you made them up.

Check out the third column on that page. That is the graduation rate for the entire state and it is 60%. Pretty sad.

The public schools here in LA are packed with little mongrels. I used to live in a nice area of Seattle and would smile as I drove by the schools as all the cute little kids were walking around. When I drive by a school in LA it makes me think I am in some third world hell hole

unless you have the money to go to a nice school, your pretty much fucked. my ex used to be a teacher at a private school in Culver City and a lot of the teachers there came from the public school system and said they would not give two shits about the school or kids, it was just a paycheck.

Looking at some of the numbers, especially pollution, for around here in S.W. Michigan is concerning compared to the rest of the state.

I wonder if the average person outside of the reach of our local LA news even knows about all the mexican vs black gang wars that happen inside schools? How about the gang rape of a young student just outside a high school homecoming dance in the Bay Area? Everyone just stood around and watched. Only after several attacks did a standerby call 911.

Can you imagine sending your kid to spend 5 days a week with these (insert your own word) ? How the hell are kids in that school going to end up knowing basics just to be able to function in life?

Realistically, we could throw an unlimited amount of money at the educational system and there would still be no shortages of dumbasses in this country. If you want to blame someone, blame the current societal standards.

Black leaders blame droput rates on a lack of school funding.

But the fact is, you could switch the students in Beverly Hills High with those in an inner city school and the dropout rates will switch schools with them.

The apple does not fall far from the tree. These kids failing out of high school just come from stupid parents, and it makes no sense to throw extra school funding their way.

Agreed that money alone is not the solution to anything. First there has to be a desire to improve things. And before that, there'd have to be an agreement that there is a problem. Maybe we're not there yet.

The more the government spends on education, the worse it gets.

What we need to do is completely privatize our nation's education system.

These. The problem is the more the school fails the more people want to fund them.

I saw him on CNN the other day and I think I might agree with him. Basically, what he was saying is that if you have enough credits and have finished the required classes by the end of your junior year you should be allowed to graduate early and that they will actually give you some grant money for college if you do. During the interview I saw with him he said he felt around 25% of the students out there could qualify for this and that for those student their senior year was just going to be a waste of time where they took non-essential classes and basically slacked off not learning much of anything.

Looking back on it, I can see myself in that situation. My senior year I had to pass English and Government and I would have enough credits to graduate. For most of the year I had work study because I had a part time job I got credit for so I got to leave early. So I would go to school and take English and Government then I had two elective classes then lunch and my day was over. So normally I left after 4th period, unless I wanted to hang with my friends during lunch. I skipped a lot, didn't pay much attention and was more interested in getting out of there than I was focusing. I passed my two classes with ease and my electives were laughable. Had I been given the option of taking those classes as electives earlier in high school and skipping my senior year, I would have for sure.

Obviously his plan isn't for everyone, but for ambitious students I don't see why we waste the money holding them back when we could let them advance themselves and use that money to focus on the other students that need it.

It looks like about 12.8% of the federal budget or 46.7 billion goes to education each year. That is just federal money. In the state I live in around 40 cents of every tax dollar goes to education. I just read that the entire state budget for my state will be around 14.6 billion and 6 billion of that will go to education.

One of the main problems with the system is that it has become so bloated with people that do nothing to improve the value of the kids education that it is pathetic.

When I went to high school we had a principle, a vice principle, four guidance counselors and teachers. There were other staff secretaries, a nurse and a couple other people, but not many extras. Now, at that same school, they have a principle, a vice principle, a dean of students, an assistant dean of students, another person who just handles disciple, there are career guidance counselors as well as emotional guidance counselors, teachers aids and a handful of other obscure people who get paid well and don't seem to do much.

So for this school alone there are a ton of administrators who get paid very well, but really have nothing to do with the students education. They could get rid of almost all of them, use that money to hire new teachers and cut the class sizes down, but I guess that would be too easy.

A ton of money gets spent on education, they just spend it so poorly. I think there needs to be a full revamp of the system. However, I do think that if they fully revamp the system and spend money wisely and determine that we need to spend more to modernize our education system and make it top notch, that is money that we have to spend.

Yeah that all makes sense. I also remember it like you do. They added a wandering security guard when I was in high school to try to bust kids smoking and leaving or returning to school grounds during the school day. He was super easy to avoid, lol.

Just the other day it was decided to close one of the elementary schools right near me. There's just no money to fund it anymore! Yeah right! It's all just wasted. Population growing+closing a school=cant be good. Not only is so much coming from taxes, but they also claim that the state lottery takes in money for education! It's just a load of shit. Some fatasses somewhere are laughing it up with all that cash while the kids stay mentally challenged, and not in a good way.
