Do Any Reputable Webmasters Use Anonymous Domain Registars?

Most of the cheaters we encounter utilize these kinds of anonymous domain registering services and we've pretty much blacklisted anyone that has their domain registered with them. Powerpipe is one of the ones that gives us the most cheaters...

Does anyone else here utilize these kinds of domain registering services, if so why?

I have for the same reason above but I do agree it makes things difficult when trying to verify identity.

I'd say it this way: Domain anonymity doesn't mean a webmaster is less reputable, but not revealing identity makes it certainly harder for programs/owners/webmasters to build up reputation if they aren't around for a long time or well known anyway.

With google's new "whois patent" many will probably think twice in the future if they use anonymity services, because penalties for domains using them could be just around the corner.

Btw, this anonymity isn't 100% effective anyway...since there are things like whois history publically available.

If you're talking about whois protection, then yeah, lots of legit webmasters use that.

Why? I'd say most use it because they dont have a p.o. box and instead put their real home address, which they dont want being public information.

There are too many fruitcakes and stalkers in the world. I believe in making them work if they're going to harass me.

Anonymous registrars? Those who offer WhoIs blockage?

If so, yes - all domains are whois protected. Reasons are simply privacy and no ulterior motive. Unless it is any valid enquiry - eg law related, - they have no problem establishing ownership.

Most of the registrars offer a whois protection for free. I can't see any reason NOT to use it.

I don't bother. I do everything openly.

1. Looking to shield yourself from cybersquatting claims? Using such a privacy service (falsifying WhoIs records) may be evidence of 'bad faith' under the ACPA of 1999.

2. Looking to spam or commit fraud? Read the fine print. These services don't protect you against a subpoena.

3. Looking to block spam? You may miss important emails.

I do everything above board and I really despise the anonymous registrar. I wouldn't be surprised to see these things outlawed and I think they should be.

Its against the law to give false information in your registration and this circumvents the whole purpose of having a public whois system anyway.

Well, enough of my soapbox, but I do feel strongly about this.

Matt

In my opinion, the best way to prevent your personal information from appearing in the WhoIs is to incorporate.
