Do you use a Macbook?
So I've just got one but I'm not sure where everything is located, or how to install anything yet. I'm looking for things like ssh, mysql, php, and a good editor for the Mac to code with.
Any tips you have when you first get a new system, on what software to start adding to it? If I want to share the system, does it support multiple users with privacy?

To get to a command line, open up Terminal, located in the Utilities folder. Download Marc Liyanage's great PHP and MySQL binaries to get them running on the puter.
For a text editor, you absolutely must use BBEdit For mutliple users, just start adding new users as administrator using system preferences... each one is protected with proper unix privacy settings. If you want extra security, you can have your home folder encrypted (open system prefs and type encrypt in the search box). Get a hold of Transmit - the best FTP client for the mac. You'll also need Video Lan Client There's a tonne of shit to play around with - just spend a week fully getting to know your system, check out versiontracker.com for all mac software. Start learning all the keyboard shortcuts - your life will become 1000x easier And welcome to the Mac world!

My Mac Book is in for repair - but you've gotta love Apple Support. I needed the power connector replacing but couldn't afford to be without the puter. After explaining my situation, and with the delays the Christmas period brings, Apple shipped me out a G4 Powerbook and told me to ship my Mac Book back to them in the carton the Powerbook arrived in.

I recomend downloading MAMP for your MySQL & PHP fucking around. It's worked out great for me. Super easy to install and play around with blogs offline. And it's nice & free.
Also install apps like mPlayer or the new intel VLC for your AVI's., Flip4Mac, Adium (my favor multi-chat client)... whatelse. Ah, thats enough for now... Also check out Lynda.com. They have a few free video samples on OS X navigation. if you have any questions I love helping out mac folks. Hit me up on ICQ 264934933 :D |

I definitely need to learn the keyboard shortcuts.. and get used to one button mouse. I feel disabled without a right-click.

Yeah bro. Any multi-button USB mouse works way better than the MightyMouse. Apple has lost it's damn mind when it comes to the mouse. I use a Macally IceMouseJr for my macbook AND my iMac. It's tiny and awesome.

I just got my MacBook last week, and it rocks.
Very fast, and very stable. I was going to get an iMac, but when I saw the MacBook in person...It had to be mine. |

Just simple shit like exposé, spotlight, terminal opacity, labels, workflows, applescript et al make you life on your computer, what twice as productive. Maybe not even twice, but in terms of pleasurabilty, it really is immeasurable. After those, just pile on the the extra less obvious but equally pleasurable 'shortcuts' and you will never go back to a PC.

So far so good, I'm really enjoying this macbook. The best thing I think I did to help was immediately change the touchpad preferences so let me tap for a mouseclick, and learn double finger scrolling. Oh, and learning to Copy/Paste was a little different. I kept trying the Ctrl button instead of the Apple button.
I don't really understand the keychains thing yet. I loved the Dashboard and widgets. It's a lot of fun just using it. Everything just looks great. I notice I really enjoy coding (php/mysql) on the Mac better than on the PC since it's closer to how it would run on my server. Parallels looks sweet.. I haven't really missed Windows tho with the Mac.
