Blackberry, Palm or Pocket PC

i'm debating on getting one of the 3. i don't really care about the device being used as a cell phone. i want to be able to check email and login to icq, aol, msn and yahoo IM's. browsing the internet would be nice as well.

just looking for comments/suggestions from people have had or currently have any of the devices.

thanks,

I have an HP iPAQ, and hubby has a Nextel Blackberry 7510. I know he likes his, but the browser on mine is much better. What's nice about his is he has email/internet wherever he has a cell phone reception.

I went with the iPAQ 6315 and it's great for my needs (though the wi-fi is pretty so-so), but depending on ones needs, blackberry or treo 600 would rock too.

Bluetooth, WLAN, MP3 player, PDA. I haven't even played with mine that much, and use it as a contact book mostly.

Blackberry...can't live without mine. Just look at the shape its in.

Blackberry 7510

Its constantly in my hands. I do about 150 e-mails a day from it. I have over 10 e-mails (different domains) being forwarded to my blackberry address so E-Mails are instant. The lucky few who have my direct Blackberry Address get instant responses. I synch it up with outlook, I organize my tasks from it, memo pad, newly added picture viewer.
I have a full HTML web browser. I have access to MSN, ICQ, and AIM all from the same program at the same time. It comes with a little password keeper.
I'm in love with the thing.

The only downside is that you only get to use 1 return address. only bad thing I can say about it. None of those other items you mention have "Push E-Mail". If E-Mail is your thing go for it!

I've had it for 6 months and I think its been through 3 life cycles. But instead of filing an insurance claim I am going to upgrade to the new 7520 that has Bluetooth and more memory.

Have to keep editing because I keep remembering shit

I have the o2 XDAII which works on MSN and ICQ great, not tried any other IM's tho.

as many e-mail accounts as ya like and it works with outlook too.

I'm happy with it, but the only thing i don't like is i'm not gonna have it in that big case so mine get's thrown around and the case is worn out quick and the earphone speaker cover got pushed in, but apart from that it's not bad.

It works with e-mail but is it push? I believe RIM (makers of Blackberry) is the only company to provide "Push E-Mail" meaning you recieve the e-mail on your handset within seconds of the other person sending them. There is no retrieval process....it comes through as a text message would on a cell phone.

I have the Treo 600 and I have a Blackberry sitting collecting dust. The Treo is the best thing you can buy right now. There's something coming out next year that is better, but for now if you can get your hands on a Treo 650 you will definitely have he best phone/PDA on the market.

Make sure you get it through Sprint. Their wireless is the fastest, hands down.

That's the same one hubby has. How do you get ICQ on it, though? I don't think his does that. And his browser is not very good, only shows text mostly, and the pages look like crap.

Its called Web Messenger. I don't have the URL on me, but a google search will find it. It's $29 a year. Its pretty cool. I'm signed on to AIM, MSN, and ICQ at the same time 24/7. I believe it also supports Yahoo but I don't have Yahoo Messenger so I dunno. You can set certain responses to certain words or letter combinations. Its amazing....Its like I'm running an answering bot.

Is there anything this thing doesn't do?

I agree on the look and feel, but not functionality. To each his own though. I need my instant e-mail and POP3 access so thats why I tend to lean towards the Blackberry.

The Sidekick is definately a fun device though. I have a couple of friends with them. But when I'm away from my Blackberry...my skin hurts

I have a blackberry. You get emails in real time, icq, aim and yahoo. I am very happy with it, plus its smaller and lighter then the sidekick.

Problem with Sprint is that they don't have any modern international pdaPhones...that's why I had to dump them

thanks for the responses. i guess i have some more research to do. i was leaning towards a dell axim or HP ipaq for a pocket PC. i'll have to look in to the treo and sidekick as well.

i thought with blackberry web client you can add up to 15 POP accounts that will forward to your device but it checks those accounts every 10 or 15 minutes. i thought you had to have an account on a blackberry enterprise server to get instant email.

i know the new t-mobile 7100t "charm" device comes with aol, icq and yahoo IM installed, but i didn't know the other blackberry devices could handle that.

i also like the fact that with a blackberry you can get internet service whenever you have a GPRS signal. with the pocket PC's it sounds like you have to be near a wireless signal/bluetooth.

and to log on you just enter you icq# and password instead of the aol nick and password

Yup, it's a palm. I'm telling you bro, it's closer to a PC than any other phone mentioned in this thread. I have ftp & ssh installed on mine.

When I'm on the road and I need to use my laptop I plug my computer into it and surf at 144kbs (actual speed). Most times I just use it's own browser for surfing. GFY is very postable and browseable on it. Even moreso on the 650.

Did I mention the GIG of smart card space you can have in the back for files?

The Blackberry doesn't even come close to it's multifunctionality. Neither does the Sidekick.

As I said before, there's only one product that even comes close. It's made by Hitachi and it's not coming until next year maybe. The new Blackberry is pretty but once you use the touchscreen on the Treo you will feel like you are handicapped when using anything else. For now, the Treo is the one to beat.

thanks for the responses. i guess i have some more research to do. i was leaning towards a dell axim or HP ipaq for a pocket PC. i'll have to look in to the treo and sidekick as well.

i thought with blackberry web client you can add up to 15 POP accounts that will forward to your device but it checks those accounts every 10 or 15 minutes. i thought you had to have an account on a blackberry enterprise server to get instant email.

i know the new t-mobile 7100t "charm" device comes with aol, icq and yahoo IM installed, but i didn't know the other blackberry devices could handle that.

i also like the fact that with a blackberry you can get internet service whenever you have a GPRS signal. with the pocket PC's it sounds like you have to be near a wireless signal/bluetooth.
All Blackberry's come with a PIN (Blackberry to Blackberry) and an E-Mail address for instant e-mail which is usually (Your Desired Name) (AT) (Subscriber)(DOT) (Blackberry) (NET) Confusing ? Not really [email protected]. You don't need an enterprise server and if you really wanted to you could run a semi-server off your computer.

POP3 gets polled for every 10min. I have my POP3 forwarded to my "nextel.blackberry.net" e-mail account so I get it instantly.

But to be honest if e-mail is not your thing, then these other products have better OS's and you might want to take a look at them. They make things look prettier I guess.

If you need instant real-time e-mail with the perks of an organizer, a task reminder, web browser, AIM etc then go with the Blackberry.

If you need the perks first and not too worried about e-mail then go with a Palm.

This is my last post on the topic...i feel like a fucking Blackberry salesman

Glad someone figured it out. The dealer couldn't tell me how to do it and hiptop.org was no help.

OK one more post.

go with a Palm system. Seems like you'd be happier going that way! Hey I'm even thinking of trading in my Blackberry as soon as the Motorola I930 smart phone comes out for Nextel Thats going to run Mobile Windows

I believe it also supports Yahoo but I don't have Yahoo Messenger so I dunno. You can set certain responses to certain words or letter combinations. Its amazing....Its like I'm running an answering bot.

Is there anything this thing doesn't do?

Do you have an upgrade for the browser, too? Adam says his is pretty bad for viewing web pages.

Yah the provided NOL browser sucks. Download ReqWireless' web browser. You can get the Trial for free or buy it for $29.95 one time payment. It browses full HTML pages, Images, Java and all. I think the only thing people run into problems with is Active X. I can easily post here on GFY on it, and check my bank account statements. Never tried logging into Paypal though but I'm sure it will work. Only problem is that its not that quick....comparable to a 56k modem.

Your decision is really a matter of personal preference. if you want email, messaging, and putty, i would highly suggest pocket pc.

Verizon has a new pocket pc that just came out that you have to call to get called the vx6600. you can get an unlimited data plan for $45 per month and i think you will be pleased. Verizon has done a rollout of EVDO to certain major cities and is not stopping. EVDO will give you connection speeds of 350-750k. its pretty nice.
if you want to learn more about that phone or any other pocket pc phone, here is a great board (direct link to the vx6600 board)

You can install programs on the Blackberry, I recommend that you go with the Nextel Blackberry solution, you can buy SSH programs for the Nextel Blackberry and because of Nextel's TCP/IP stack, you won't need to use the Blackberry Enterprise Server to SSH out as you would with other Blackberry phone systems (T-Mobile, Verizon)
