Ever ask an American about the geography of Canada.

It's amazing how much American's don't know about Canada... yet where so close to them.

I say all of us Canadian Webmasters storm the white house. Poor ol' G.W. would never see it coming...

I agree...it is weird how oblivious Americans are to what is going on in the country right above them.

Us Canadians are well aware of US history, geography, politics, etc. but that is definately not vice versa.

I have met quite a few people in the US who thought that we pretty much live in igloos up here. Many Americans think that the capital of Canada is Toronto and I even bet many cannot name who our prime minister is.

I am happy to be Canadian today because it is the official start of the May 2-4 long weekend...woohoo

I have had a couple of holidays in Hawaii. Never been to mainland USA. I'm an Aussie. Back in the 80's there was this guy on tour bus in Oahu I got talking with, who said he was involved in US Naval Intelligence ( an oxymoron I'm sure, like Police Integrity etc ). Without blinking an eye and with no sence of irony, he asked me what language we spoke here in Australia.

It's funny how American's, not all of course - though in general, are so ignorant of politics/geography outside their own borders. I wonder how many Americans know off by heart:
1. How many provinces are there in Canada, and name them?
2. What is the capital of Australia? Name the States of Australia?
3. Name the member States of the EUC, and who is queing up?
4. What is the favourite form of contraception in Japan.
5. Where The Fuck Is Africa?

In Australia, as in Europe, we get a constant feed of US TV, so most of us here know at least 30 of the fifty US states and are familiar with your politics and Federal Constitution. On the other hand, I am amazed how much time on US News is devoted to talking presenter heads rather than real issues. It's a bit like having your main cource without the meat and potatoes.

I think the question should be "Who gives a fuck?" You guys bring up things that might be important/interesting to you, but have no importance or impact on my life.
Capital of (insert your country here)?
Who gives a fuck? Not me. I'm not going there. I'm busy.

What language do they speak (insert country/region here)?
Who gives a fuck? Not me. I can barely speak English. I'm from NJ

Hey, what's the capital of New Jersey? What is the capital of New York? What's the best way to get from Queens to NJ if the Yankees are playing? What is a fast and safe shortcut you can use in Harlem when the Major Deegan is fucked? What word do you NOT want to say to a cab driver in Mexico? This shit I know. I don't know the capital of California, mainly because I don't give a fuck! I don't flame other countries, I don't flame other webmasters, doesn't matter to me where you are from. I have friends in USA, Canada, South America, Europe, Russia and Australia. One reason we are on good terms is they don't rag on Americans (at least when they talk to me LOL).

Well, the difference between the US and Canada and why I don't know the name of Canada's (or The Czech Republic's) Prime Minister is that, when the US President says something, it ripples all over the world. It's rare for the Canadian Prime Minister to say something that would much affect the average American. But, were something like that to happen, it would be in the news and many more Americans would know the what and who.

That said, Americans on the whole are abysmally ignorant about geography. I've seen TV magazine shows where the reporter goes out with a world map, and a few bozos couldn't even put their finger on the US on a geographical map lacking political borders. And even using a map showing political borders, they couldn't point to even the general area where the Vietnams are.

Major historical events fare no better. They found some people who thought The Civil War happened in the early 1900's and had no idea who came first: Millard Fillmore or FDR.

I remember some people couldn't even hazard a guess as to who we fought in the Spanish-American War. (Maybe they thought it was a trick question.)

It's pretty sad when people are so ignorant about the history of their own country.

Do you ever watch Jay Leno go out and ask people on the street simple questions about things that should be common knowledge? Like "What kind of fruit are raisins made from?" or "Who is the Vice President of the United States right now?"

hehehe interesting thread....

well nothing personal guys but americans are really dumb seems that dan quayle is the father of them all...

i graduated from a highschool in Wisconsin in 1991 i lived in usa during the gulf war..
when i arrived the question people asked me were
-do you have tv in france?
-you are not affraid that saddam might invade france?
-you have reebooks in france?
most of them were unable to locate france on a world map.
one joke in france (supposed to be a true story)
a texan guy looks at the eifel tower and asks the guy how many gallons of oil it produces everyday...

ignorance is made by the scholar system and the tv...
during the gulf war i had to recieve french newspaper to know that not only usa were in the gulf but also france, uk etc...
in history and geography classes they learn only about us history and us geography (12th grade !)
in france from the age of 10 you learn about the whole world's geography and history...
the real proof of americans ignorance is that they believed what dubbya bush said and elected him...from the time he presented himself all people from every single country outside usa knew that he was a retarded raised by dan quayle and Mr rogers...

i could go on and on.....oh well....

No clue what they teach in schools nowadays SABAI, but not all of us are dumb Americans. Sorry that you didn't attend a full 12 yrs of US schooling. World History is a choice in the upper years but is mandatory (or was) in the lower grades. And smaller towns tend to lack in news on World affairs. Lets not discount that the younger generations tend to disregard World affairs until they reach the age where real responsibility sets in. Too much of todays youth seem deadset they will reach unattainable goals simply because they don't want to work for it... its that, *I* don't care, I'm going to get rich next week so why should *I* care about anything else?!

The old man and I are up to speed usually on things. And we know most 30+ are.

Oh.... btw the hubby (being more Native American than not) is curious to know what YOU know about HIS people/s. Betting its very little and there WILL be a quiz if you say you know anything. If you don't then why not? Its an integral part of this country that is hidden in history.

More Native Americans were killed in one way or another than the Holecaust... So why aren't they still prosecuting or rewriting history to reflect that?? Ummmm 6 million to 40 million. But thats not a real big deal eh?

as for native americans i totally agree that there was a genocide ...and most people in france know about it...
as for what i know about native americans well... i know more about sioux people than other natives... my best friend while in us was sioux...went to pow wows and stuff
know that the black hills are their spiritual grounds and that the trouble started when the us gov discovered gold over there... i red a book about Sitting Bull also...

well in fact i don't know in deep but i know some stuff might be amusing to make the quizz...i might learn som stuff

lol Sabai. I read your post to him and got a grimace. He's from the Eastern US tribes, not western. There seems to be some friendly banter between the two tribal 'sections'. You know the sort, Oh you're a WESTERN eh? Or of you you were the Eastern WALKING Indians.

But the majority of NA's that I have met just say, eh its done with, we're ALL Americans and lose the politaical BS about Italian Americans, Native Americans etc. Sure remember and celebrate the roots of you're ancestors but not a real need to stick titles in there.

But you are right, alot of people can't tell you where Germany is for instance, or that we had a couple of wars with that country. We kind of wonder if they need to add a couple of years to public schooling to get all the basics like geography and history covered since they have all the tech subjects that need taught nowadays. Teaching just the techno without the other things seems pert stupid. I know I spent alot of time having to learn Latin (which I can't really remember much of) when they could have been teaching something alot more important as a req'd subject.

Of course we can't. Our leaders are getting blowjobs and acting like buffoons - that's newsworthy. If your prime minister would get a little head, misuse a bunch of words then admit he spent a decade stoned we'd hear all about him. All he's doing is running a fucking country.

Also Sticks, you're answering your own question there. Most television & movies come from here, educating the world (to an extent) about America - if it were the other way around you wouldn't know so many states.

Also is Japan's favorite form of contraception a "real issue" you think should be on the news?

Yeah, the only way you'd have noticed the frogs were helping out in the war was to read a french paper explaining how all the heroic deeds were done by the french soldiers.
In another instance, I'm sure it was a proud day for you when the french refused to let nato fly planes over their airspace.

If I were you, I'd be embarrassed that you are technically, socially, and economically outclassed by those "stupid americans"
hahahahaha

I don't really want to bash France, but the Royal Air Force still has permission to fly in their airspace.
The only Americans I ever met were over 50 and getting out of the USA because they were sick of all the 'America is great' bullshit when all they read in the papers was killings, fat stupid people on the streets and 'perfect' people on the tv.
12clicks - the Gulf War is a bit of a sore point - the US killed more British and American troops than Saddam.
Unfortunately I am British - I can't wait to get my act together and move to the Netherlands...

i guess nobody is perfect like our webmasters

one of my all time favorite stories was when i was at work with my aunt, at the department of education, meeting her for lunch with my uncle. she told the person in the next cubicle that she was leaving the next day for albuquerque(new mexico) and she said..."wow i've never been out of the country"

anyways, CHASS, you are the biggest idiot!

lakers vs sixers in the finals. im a big sixers fan. but, they will get their ass kicked by the lakers in 4. 5 if they are lucky

hehhe Gemini I too had to learn latin this sucked ...when i was 11 years old i didn't really see the utility of learning it...now i'm glad i have a few notions as it helps understanding the roots of the language..but sure that for english people its different as most of english language is from saxon roots and not latin...
12 clicks if you read carefully i said, france, uk etc... not only france...if you want to know the truth i hate france ( its beautifull but no fun)
as for your remark about technical social and economical difference i think you'd better go hide under a rock as usa in in full economic recession (france is quite stable) technical , i wonder why usa is just getting all our engineers work for the nasa all our cinema techs work in hollywood and all our computer geeks work in silicone valley...last but not least our social laws are far better than most countries except scandinavian ones....
Kat.. sorry i don't get your point here...

SABAI, saying it doesn't make it so. You're clueless about the US economy (the economy that the rest of the world follows lock step)

The dow is about 200 points from its all time high, interest rates are very low, and the housing market is skyrocketing. you don't get that in a (what did you call it?) "full blown recession"?
