HBO in Canada?

Is there any way to get HBO in Canada? With a satellite cable or something?

Bell has it, or you can do what everyone else does and get pirated American satellite.

I'm a big fan of boxing and would really like to get HBO just for that. I do get PPV events here but that's it.

I dont think you can get it in canada. I heard the only way is by having a black satelite (illegal US satelite). Go to http://www.shaw.ca/Tmplt.asp?PageID=685 for more info

I have absolutely no idea what those are. And do I need the three things you mentionned? Or any of them?

It's illegal equipment if you want to steal the satellite signals.

I actually thought about buying them, until my neighbor received a visit recently from the RCMP and they seized all the equipment, including his dish on the roof and he received a 5k fine.

I changed my mind. (I was pissed because I thought they actually didn't do anything about it)

I think he was stealing from DISH Networks. All I know is that they took everything and he received a 5k fine. It can go up to 10k. I didn't know him personally.

Ok I thought they were only enforcing for hacked Canadian satellites - at least that's what I had read in the paper.

Nope. Since 2002 it's illegal to receive american satellite signals (even if you pay for it (Grey Market))

HBO is not available in Canada, and BEV does not carry it. I have every single channel BEV offers, and no HBO. much of the same shows are on TMN anyways, like Sopranos, Six feet under, etc...

My girlfriend was at Niagra falls (canada) last week and she was watching HBO from the hotel. I wish I knew how to get it though, you can get some HBO shows with COGECO digital cable but not the channel itself.

That's the VIDEO ON DEMAND from Cogeco. But it's not HBO.

It's like "The Movie Network" http://www.tmn.ca They have all the HBO shows like Curb your enthusiasm, Sopranos, Six Feet Under... But it's not HBO.

There is no way you can get HBO in Canada unless you do it illegally.

HBO in Canada is called "The Movie Network". It has most of the same programming.

You can order American satellite programming in Canada, do a Google for "grey market subscription"; technically bending the rules, but not stealing.

You can't order american satellite programming in Canada. Even if you pay for it.

"On April 26th, 2002, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled unanimously that businesses providing US satellite decoding equipment and programming and the Canadians that are using that equipment are breaking the law.

In simple terms, the Court said that Canadians would only be permitted to receive those satellite services being offered by ExpressVu and Star Choice. The court said that receiving foreign satellite signals was illegal."

"If you are someone who have a Direct TV or DISHNET satellite system, you are breaking the law. It does not matter whether you are paying a monthly subscription fee or are using a reprogrammed access Card. C-Band satellite owners subscribing to US satellite signals are also breaking the law."

"Consequences

Individuals can be fined up to $5,000 or receive a maximum one year in jail, while companies can be fined as much as $25,000."

Can you name one person who has gone to jail or been fined for programming they were paying for, even if such was through a broker?

The grey market and reverse grey market sidestep the rules with technicalities. It's where the sale is made that matters. US DBS doesn't sale to Canada because of agreements (not laws) and Canada (by law) doesn't allow sale of US signals because the Canadian government thinks any "foreign" TV signals getting in are going to harm them culturally.

It doesn't matter. Even if you pay, it's still against the law.

Canada = Bell Express Vu or Starchoice.

That's it.

If you receive Direct TV or Dish Network signals and even if you are a subscribers using a DTH provider from oustide it is illegal in Canada.

I'm not even sure if my neighbor was paying or not. All I know is that he got everything confiscated and he received a 5k fine.
