can anyone tell me - if I zip the movies and surfers download zipped files, is that still violating Acacia's Patents?

According to them, yes.

This is free legal counsel given by an idiot with a big mouth. Take it for what you will and consult a real attorney.

From my understanding, they claim ownership on the method and rights to transmitting non-live video over any digital medium. Satellite, Internet, digital cable, etc...

The format doesn't seem to be relevant, but rather the idea of moving a digital file from one location to another is what seems to be covered.

I'm not a lawyer, so take what I say above as nothing more than my opinion.

It would be a waste of time & money for Acacia to go after anyone but the big boys, so I wouldn't worry too much.

They should just sue anyone that uses wires -- there could be files moving in all those wires!

I think that would still fall under there patent... but i wouldnt worry about it.. alot of people seem to be running around frantic.. but quite franky.. i have a feeling they wont do shit.. I got my packet.. just like the others.. and it was basically a joke.. they wouldnt be sending out "request" letters.. if they accually knew they could get everyone to hand over money

I think Berman's reply was, "Probably........."

Which means he doesn't really know..

One would think if you're gonna try to slam dunk a bunch of people for infringement, you would have all of your bases covered...

"Probably" doesn't quite cut it in a court room..
