On March 13, Joliet police arrested Wayne L. Orkwiszewski, 57, on charges of battery, assault and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident at Dollar General, 916 W. Jefferson St.

“I felt like this was a hate crime. I wasn’t doing anything but minding my own business,” said Aiysha Powell, who is black and the mother of the 9-year-old boy who allegedly was hit by Orkwiszewski.

Powell and Dwight Williams, both of whom were at the store, alleged that Orkwiszewski came inside yelling and using profanity about someone parked in a handicapped spot. Orkwiszewski claimed that he suffers from osteoarthritis in his knees from years of karate and speed skating.

Powell said she wasn’t in a handicapped parking spot, but she did move her car after Orkwiszewski entered the store.

She said Orkwiszewski allegedly kept harassing her and her children, who were in her car, and repeatedly used the n-word.

Powell said the incident escalated when Orkwiszewski punched her son in the face. Cellphone video of the incident recorded by Diana Hernandez, who had been shopping nearby, shows Powell’s son walk up to an irate Orkwiszewski and say “What’s up?” repeatedly before Orkwiszewski struck him in the face.

Powell said she used pepper spray on Orkwiszewski in response, and another man punched him. Before Orkwiszewski drove away from the scene, he was stopped by officers and arrested after they spoke with witnesses.

Powell said she’s spoken with investigators and the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office since the incident, and she was told charges would be upgraded against Orkwiszewski.

State’s attorney spokeswoman Carole Cheney said the case has a return date of
April 4, and she said she couldn’t comment on “what may or may not be filed.”

Orkwiszewski admitted he did “let loose” by using the racial slur against Powell, but he claimed “she started being racist” by calling him a “white cracker.” He also blamed his “high anxieties.”

“When you got two people with their tempers high, they’re going to call each other names, regardless of what happened,” Orkwiszewski said.

However, Hernandez said Powell only started yelling at Orkwiszewski after he called her the racial slur about
20 times and used other insults. Powell said she did call Orkwiszewski a “white cracker” after he kept calling her the racial slur multiple times and putting his finger in her face.

Orkwiszewski also claimed he didn’t punch Powell’s son, only “grazed the top of his shoulder,” even though Hernandez’s video appears to show him striking the boy in the face. He said he felt “horrible” about what happened “between me and the boy.”

“I know better. I love children,” Orkwiszewski said.

Orkwiszewski alleged the boy kept running into his stomach and groin, which Powell denied. Hernandez’s video does not show Powell’s son doing so, either.

Williams and Hernandez tried that when Orkwiszewski left the parking lot in his truck by driving in reverse, he attempted to hit them when they tried to photograph his license plate, and they jumped out of the way.

Orkwiszewski claimed that when he saw a man in the rear-view mirror as he left, he hit his brakes “real fast” and drove away.

Powell said she thinks Orkwiszewski was given a “slap on the wrist” by the police when he was arrested and released on his own recognizance.

“If he was a black man hitting a white child, he wouldn’t have been able to bond out,” she said.

I feel sorry for the child being raised in a culture that teaches him he has to act all ghetto bad and escalate when conflict arises. It was sad watching him pull that "what's up?" shit. Should have just got the guys license plate and called the cops.
