UK to Impose 10yr Prison Sentence for Online Pirates
So 10 years max for file sharers in the UK who transmit, download and or provide access to stolen content. What are you thoughts? Reasonable? Will it be effective? FACT SHEET ------------------ Last year the UK Government announced a plan to increase the maximum prison sentence for online copyright infringement to ten years. The current maximum of two years is not enough to deter infringers, lawmakers argued. The plan followed a recommendation put forward in a study commissioned by the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) a few months earlier. This study concluded that criminal sanctions for online copyright infringement could be increased to bring them into line with related offenses, such as counterfeiting. Before implementing the changes the Government launched a public consultation, asking for comments and advice from the public. But, even though the vast majority of the responses urged the authorities not to up the prison term, lawmakers decided otherwise. As a result, a new draft of the Digital Economy bill published this week extends the current prison term from two to ten years. The relevant part amends the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, and simply replaces the word two with ten. The new bill was unveiled in Parliament yesterday where it passed its first reading. If adopted in its current form, it allows courts to hand out tougher sentences. |

				 | I can't say how effective; but it will be far more effective than the "war on drugs". 1. People don't need computer connections to move drugs. 2. Infringers are stealing from rich people; that won't last forever. |

				 | useless...without a global cop, covering the whole internet, this law is exactly like the chicago gun ban, totally pointless when other states are permissive. |

				 | And Her Majesty's Court will support the rights of porn IP copyright? You expect equal enforcement of criminal laws when it comes to pornographers' rights -- good fucking luck with that |

It's about site owners tracking down the criminal file sharing enterprise through their download activity, server logs, and upload patterns, etc. then documenting how they work, poisoning content linkable only to their specific fake member theft account, filing a suit, and getting a settlement. There's a certain illegal tube site owners living in the UK who probably don't want to be the perfect target for an example case. | |

				 | All we need is one 14 year old to get caught...and we're good. I think you guys have it wrong. Wiping porn off the net as much as possible is their goal. Problem is, few adult companies are "clean" enough to actually go to court. Most will hide under a rock. |

				 | Exactly, nice for Hollywood producers who start a lobby with politcal friends. A person that works in adult have to pay taxes, but won't anything in return. At least, that is how it works in Holland. Even opening a bank account could be difficult, while the government owns two banks themselves that they saved for going bancrupt and got saved with tax payers money.

				 | This is too harsh of a sentence for the crime... In Canada at least, you can serve as little as 5-years in jail for something like murder or man slaughter! |
