US Crime rates are falling

Good news! I wonder if Bill Bennet or the Freakonomics dudes will credit ABORTIONS for this trend as well.

Quote:
Preliminary FBI figures reveal that the levels of both violent crime and property crime in the U.S. declined in 2010 from the previous year's data. The 2010 Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report, just released today, shows a 5.5 percent decrease in the number of reported violent crimes when compared with data from 2009. It also shows a 2.8 percent decline in reported property crimes.

You would think with unemployment being so high it would be just the opposite.

My hometown here has been laying off police officers left and right and you can see it - We never see the local police cruising around.

My town just went through a major uprising because the city commissioner wanted to fold the police department and contract out to the county which would mean much less of a police presence. People here were so up in arms that the city commissioner ended up resigning over it.

The funny thing is he said he wanted to do it for budget reasons because we can't afford them, but everyone in town knows he and the police chief don't see eye to eye. He claimed that he had cut everything he could from the city budget and the police was all that was left, but then the truth comes out that there are five people on the city payroll who are friends of his (including his wife's sister) who basically have no job description and seemingly do nothing yet pull in a $45K+ a year salary plus great benefits. When that came out during a city council meeting he got pissed and said, "If you don't like how I staff the offices I will offer my resignation." The council voted unanimously to accept it. He was shocked because he thought they wouldn't call his bluff.

now he is gone and those other people are gone. It is crazy what people get away with right in front of everyone.

All over the Country police forces have been reduced in size due to budgets. When you have less police, they discover/crack less crimes.

This doesn't mean we have less crimes, it means less are being recorded on the books.

So the best way to completely reduce crime rates is to have less laws?

Umm, it's not solved or "found" crimes, it's reported crimes. Less police doesn't make people report crime less.

Reported crimes isn't the same as actual crimes committed. The police do exactly the same fiddling with their statistics here.

It relates... people report all types of wacky crap, the less they're able to respond, solve/crack/discover, etc.. the less people report.

Polices have changed because of budgets, some crimes in some locations have to be reported through the Internet and everyone doesn't have the Internet, thus the crime is not reported. Then in some areas the support is so low that getting through to someone to report the crime is almost impossible, so people give up.

When the public is aware the police force is already thin, like when they quit responding to traffic accidents when nobody is hurt, people can't see the police as often, so they tend to report less crimes knowing it's pointless, even more so with property crimes.

Rape also falls into this category, if an area totally fails to handle the cases due to work load/money, the amount of reported rapes drop. That doesn't mean less are happening, far more happen than ever get reported, far less get discovered through medical discovery, the chain goes on.

It's a level of confidence that someone can help them and that branches down throughout society with all crimes.

Exactly - just like unemployment "goes up" when jobs get more available, because people who stopped looking for work start again. Crimes aren't reported because people think no one will do anything anyway.

Yeah it's complete bullshit when they sit and wait outside bars.

They tried that here and 3 of our 5 cops got fired for doing it.
It used to be cops made sure you got home safe if you were drunk. Protect and serve.

It's backwards now, they're not here for us, we are here for them.

While most of the time I would agree that cops shouldn't be setting people up, I have no problem with them sitting outside a bar and busting everyone who tries to drive home drunk. That is protecting and serving. It is protecting the general public from getting hit by a drunk driver.

If you are going to go to a bar and drink you should either have a designated driver or be ready to take a cab or call someone to come get you. No exceptions.

A friend of mine had his bag stolen at the gym a few weeks ago. In it was his wallet, keys, personal and work cellphone as well as some medical supplies like a blood sugar monitor (he's diabetic). He didn't even consider calling the police because he assumed that they would never get his stuff back or catch the person that did it. The only reason he ended up calling was that he needed the case number for insurance to pay for the phone and so he could drive around without a license until he got it replaced.

America is nice. People are learning that if you rob the wrong dude, your pretty much fucked when the person you robbed get's his CHI together and shoots you in the face. Totally legal in 2012.

PS. I think that the 5.5 percent decrease in the number of reported violent crimes when compared with data from 2009 is complete bullshit, the population is larger and stronger now. Pretty sure there are more Illegals now a days as well. Hell i donno.

To protect and serve does not mean they are a personal taxi service. How about a littler personal responsibility and either arranging to have a way home, calling a cab or just not drinking?

They are when it comes to protection. Their responsibility is to protect you not arrest you.
They can give you a ride to jail, why not home?

Buzzard you're describing a peace officer. You can see them standing at some concerts ignoring policies being broken, they're keeping the peace. Peace officers is all America had at one time, now they're basically gone.

Today, we have the police officer... who enforces policies and laws. They don't protect anything, not me or you or property, nothing - they only enforce policies.

If they kept the peace, you're right, they would drive you home or if they did take you in, it would be to sober you up then take you home. But, we don't live in that America anymore.

Couldnt be much worse. Texas executes a higher percentage of its own people than China, and percentage wise the US incarcerates more people than any other country on the planet.

Realistically you or your friends should protect you from driving drunk. It isn't that I am opposed the police giving someone a ride home from a bar or something like that, it is just that the way things are now it just isn't in the budget. The town I live in has about 4 bars in it (its a small town). On Friday and Saturday night all of them are pretty full. At any given time On Friday or Saturday night the police only have 2 officers on duty. Those two officers could spend hours just driving drunk people home and because of that could miss actual drunk drivers or they could be in a situation where they might be delayed in responding to a call because of this.

I look at it like this. Everyone knows it is illegal to drink and drive. If someone is going to go out and drink and risk driving home they deserve every ounce of punishment they get if they get caught. They should take responsibility for themselves and either arrange a ride in advance or call for one after or just not do it. They shouldn't put it into the hands of the tax payers to make sure that they get home safely because they decided to go out and get drunk.
