Hyphens in domain name ?
HI:
What is your experience, is there a maximum of hyphens that should be avoided? I was thinking to take domain with 3 hyphens. For example: gay-slut-suck-cock.com Will this be considered kind of spam techniques for SE. (SE is only goal, I don't care much about type in traffic) thanks

you are aloud for seo to 4 words in your domain.
The advantage of hyphens is that it dissociates the words. very good for seo. The disadvantage is: surfers may forget to put the hyphens when retyping url. if they want to go back to your site without bookmarking.

I'm sure googlebot nowadays can dissociate words written in a domain without a hyphen ...

What I do when deciding whether I need hyphens or not is type my possible domain name into Google without the hyphens eg: gayslutsuckcock and see if Google says: Did you mean gay slut suck cock
If it does recognise all the seperate words in your possible domain you probably don't need them, if not hyphens might be an advantage .... just my ![]()

Save your money...and register a .com
When you go to register a domain...and the .com is taken...usually the other extensions are available (of course not one word domains)...why because whoever owns the .com will in the long run take traffic from the other names with other extensions. If your trying to market to the largest consumer base in the world...America go with a .com , even if it is a four word domain. A hyphen domain is basically worthless... Think like a surfer, I don't know many people who bookmark adult websites...and there is no way I will remember to add that hyphen. As far as SE traffic...just keep reading the posts about SEO on GFY and you won't need a hyphen name. I always go in this order, .com , .net , .org anything else is worthless, now if you are trying to target a certain country by all means register the country extension. The worst possible extension is a .ws (I think this extension is black listed from SE) |

Google can, and does, pick words out of a mash of letters. But, you could inadvertently put yourself in search results for words that are useless to your site if Google sees a different word combination than you want, i.e. www. www.sexexchange.com -- sex exchange vs. sex ex change, etc. Between hyphen and underscore, use hyphens. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/dashes-vs-underscores/ With regards to whether dashes in a url hurts rankings, I have never seen a top ranking url with more than 3 hyphens...I'm sure there are, but going over 2 starts to get spammy, and I now stick to only one. |

hyphens arent bad. notice my .com site? remember the surfer isnt really going to type in your name to find porn, they are going to use other key words. i dont really expect mine to type erotic playhouse. the way google is right now with seo, listings are up and down, one day mine is number one, the next is 200. i believe seo its the main factor. and being around for a while and using all resources to get quality traffic. go with the hypen, but make sure its .com and if you can get the others just to have them so noone can get the other traffic. and as i have said on other forums. the icann or whatever they called is putting domains up for sale now. you need about $150,000 to purchase one because they want people to know what they are getting into. .xxx would be perfect for this industry and would probably be able to eliminate all "under 18" since parental controls could just block out the .xxx. id love investors on this one but oh well. im sure someone will take my idea that is loaded with cash.

hyphen in domains arent bad.. depending on what you want to use them for.
If you are planning to brand your site.. Then, it might not be such a great idea.. But then, it could also work with branding, if you have a shitload of traffic & very useful content... Everything comes down to what skills you have.. goodluck

There is a theory going around out there that MSN does not mind hyphens. In fact, people are now using multiple hyphens between words, as in go--fuck--yourself.com
We have not had a chance to experiment with it ourselves. |

My opinion is a short .com that associates with the website your trying to promote is best, and if .com domain you like is available you should check to see if it was registered in the past and dropped...because most likely it was tested to see if it could generate traffic or not...domainers have $$$ and keep the ones that work. I did hear that many financial comapanys were also invested in domain names as a hedge. So it is possible that some great names might get dropped if they will pick just the super ones to keep due to the financial woes on wall street. |
