In another thread someone asked about hosting lots of videos on their own tube site.

I have posted about this before, however here is a better summary.

PeerTube

PeerTube is free open source software, the source is below:

PeerTube can handle ridiculous amounts of traffic on a small server because popular videos are peered with other viewers watching the same video.

You can also federate with other PeerTube sites for more content, or just run your own instance with just your content. There are multiple federations that exist. If you choose to federate you can have thousands of videos on your tube from the moment it's installed.

It's free and open source but it's not simple to install. Once installed it's very easy to use and run.

I can install PeerTube for anyone who wants to run it for $75.

You will need a bare metal server from Kimsufi, OVH, SoYouStart, MojoHost or Online.net or an instance from Vultr or Digital Ocean with the minimum following specs:

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver
4 Cores recommended
8GB RAM
100GB HDD minimum up to any maximum, more videos = more disk space
Root access

Videos can be added easily.

You can upload videos directly, import from a URL or even import from a torrent file.

You can run unlimited instances and share videos between them seamlessly.

You have automated moderation tools, you can run an open instance or a closed instance.

The possibilities are unlimited with PeerTube.

Interesting concept, not so much due bandwidth saving but more due how it could turn into perfect CDN option.

You can network instances of PeerTube that you yourself run and place them anywhere.

You can use the API to serve videos from the instances, you don't need to use the front end.

As a video distribution platform it is perfect.

Has anyone used it for Adult yet? - I get the tech - It just seems that in a commercial environment it will be a logistical nightmare the way it is set up...

Mod_rewrite enabled, Curl mod enabled.

MySQL Cgi-bin Perl Access GD Library 2+ with freetype support.

Generally, no I am not. I spend most of my time working for my own business and interest. However if you have an idea that both interests me and has an exceptional renumeration structure then I am happy to consider it.

Dropped in via QBitorrent - are all users typically viewable like this? I'm assuming so?

Yes the network is glued together with ActivityPub & WebTorrent to be censorship resistant and redundant.

A new fork of PeerTube about to be released will also allow for unlimited cross federation redundancy.

The idea is that if 2000 people watch one video at the same time it won't bring a small instance down.

Very interesting Tech, I am thinking of a future project, would this tech be able to integrate with other tube platforms such as KVS or Mechbunny. ?

From what I can see on the PeerTube website the Tube theme is not very appealing. Or is there some custom themes for this PeerTube ?

You can use the built in API and build out any front end you like.

There's nothing stopping you from integrating this with anything because it's (1) open (2) has a complete API.

If you have a GitHub membership, signup to repo release emails to keep abreast of the development of the platform.

I know there are several forks now that are planning independent releases and the current PeerTube is written in Node.Js which makes it non trivial to modify. There's a PHP implementation of PeerTube just around the corner.
