:stop A Philosophical Rumination - Does the law actually exist?

Does the law actually exist? I am thinking out loud here, but what really IS 'The Law' ?

You can't touch it, you can't see it, you can't feel it... But... We are expected to just accept that it is there, and to spend our entire lives, living by it and following it blindly, at all times...

That kinda sounds like a religion to me. A bit like Jesus... Or Mohammed, or Buddha or whatever flavour God you have chosen.... But while you don't HAVE to believe in a God - You DO have to follow the law. Yet they are both clearly similar things...

I suggest that there is no such thing as ANY actual 'LAWS'... But that they are merely a set of guidelines, set out for the stupid people to follow, because they can't be trusted to deal with the circumstances of their own mistakes... Again, just like religion...

So, I ask you? Do Laws actually exist? Discuss...

& oh yeah... Poo... Gotta mention poo...

You sound like a character taken out of a Dostoyevsky novel, but of course more fecal than feverish . . .

On a serious note though, if you're actually SERIOUS, OP, read up on EMMANUEL KANT'S Categorical Imperative

Quote:
Kant's theory is an example of a deontological moral theory–according to these theories, the rightness or wrongness of actions does not depend on their consequences but on whether they fulfill our duty. Kant believed that there was a supreme principle of morality, and he referred to it as The Categorical Imperative.

Wow... I knew my UC Berkeley degree would come in handy someday.... I just didn't know it would be on a porn board. LMBAO

This is just some dumb shit, but I'll play along.

If there was no law that says you need to stop at a red light, what do you think would happen?

You see that guy at the local pub who doesn't like your face? He doesn't hit you over the head with a pipe because of laws.

This reminds me of the opening bit in one of my favorite comedy albums. Lenny Bruce talks about exactly what your question is bringing up. Listen to the first 10 minutes.

Let's instead take a look at a society without laws, and ask ourselves if that's a society we'd prefer to live in.

For one thing, there would be no reason for stores to exist any more, if this would certainly happen to them every day. The list goes on and on.

If there was no law, most people would still stop. At the moment I stop, because it's the safe thing to do - Not because 'Its against the law for me not too' Those who didn't stop would be the 'stupid ones' that need the common sense rules I spoke about. Yes, it's gonna effect some innocents, but it's Darwinism at work, so it will even out in the long run...

Thanks - I have downloaded this as an .mp3, and I'll listen to it later while I'm out on my walk
