Smartlink versus single link

Hi All,

At Traffic Company we mostly work with a smartlink, but we are also able to serve single/direct links.
We would like to know what you prefer and why!

Personally I have my opinion, but I would like to hear yours! :-)

Do you work with a smartlink or single links at the moment?

#Off topic, LosPollos.com looks nice! Compliments for that, I will hit you up next week in order to see if we can work together!

What would your opinion regarding the question single link versus smartlink?

I like smartlinks but if I have a specific site, which will convert a certain offer better, I would prefer the direct link to the particular offer. Sometimes I know better how to target and optimize, so single link per offer sometimes is better.

I totally agree on this!! Good input. For niche/specific traffic you could better work with a direct/static link.

Yes, thank you for further explaining it. I did not express it as good as you did with the niche specific traffic in particular. I wasn't specific enough. Thank you!

A smartlink is more beneficial for the ad network, as they are able to rotate different ads through it. For example, if you serve a lot of Pakistan traffic on your website and they don't need it, they might direct it to other ad networks they have partnerships with. In this case a webmaster will get better fill-rate but the obvious consequence is that he/she will lose control over the ads. That's how most ad-lockers, tech support ads get served. If your viewers complain, you should use static links for better control. Money-wise, smartlinks are better. Correct me if I am wrong ?

Typically I see smart links benefiting those that don't have the ability, time, or know how to optimize their own ads/offers.

For those of us who are setup for our own internal optimizations we yield better results from optimizing individual offers.

Smart links generally optimize traffic as a whole (all affiliates grouped together) and since I have optimized a ton of traffic/sources individually I can tell you that not all have the same winning offers.

We offer a customized "smart link" which we optimize manually per traffic source which generally yields better results for our pubs. We only do this in certain cases however.

agree !

a smartlink might have some advantages but makes optimizing at the source nearly impossible.
so i would say smartlink is good when you send blind traffic, pops or skimmed traffic but as soon there is a professional media buyer or traffic optimizer in the game he will not like it.

the points what are speaking FOR smartlinks are:

1. the final target will be done at the end of the chain. means that there are no different information sources with possibly different information is in the game (IPs, ISPs, device or model detection etc.)

2. a user can expect that the smartlink will go always to the best available offer - even when offers are going offline.

and these arguments speaking against smartlinks:

1. optimization at the source - i.e banners or textlinks what should say something about the product. on a smartlink I usually do not even know if the traffic goes to a videopage, a dating offer or penis enlargement - that makes it hard to choose the right advertising material.

2. if the smartlink provider does not have an offer for particular traffic it happens in 99% of all cases that this traffic ends up in offerchains and getting forwarded from one to the next. in many of these case they are ending up on browser locker or tech support or phishing sites. the idiot in such a case is the publisher who can lose his search engine positions.

i have seen a few nice solutions for smartlinks what gives me the ability to decide what can be done with the offer and in case it can not be done the traffic gets redirected to my own solution where i can decide what the next steps are.

Lame response..

You only have 6 dating offers...

Conversion Sharks

How in the world can you make a statement with so little to base it on..

And the offers you have are very low conversion offers on top of everything else..

i agreed to his points not to his product (because i donīt know it)

btw. if a company has 6 products for a wordwide market it is not "only"
for my understanding it is "too much" when the manpower in the background is not outstanding strong.

but thatīs another story

You have no idea what you are talking about.

We actually have hundreds of dating offers spanning pretty much every GEO. We are a private network and do not publicly list the vast majority of our offers. We have close relationships with most of the advertisers in the dating vertical and have split tested pretty much every offer in adult dating time and time again. We also manage traffic for a number of the large traffic networks.

In addition to managing millions of clicks for our clients we spend large amounts monthly on our internal media buys.

Considering that you would recommend a smart link over internal optimizations tells me that you do not have considerable amounts of knowledge on the subject.

But thanks for your uneducated input.
