Porn or Violence?

http://www.msnbc.com/news/833969.asp

I totally agree with the laws being implemented to protect children from accessing Pornography. However my question is this: why is it ok to banish pornography but yet violence is kept main stream and is advertised everywhere?

What are your guy's takes on that? I am anti-guns and anti-violence i would like to have other people's opinions on this as well.

I think it depends on what kind of violence.

Someone like eminem has a much worse affect on kids than porn or violence, because lots of kids watch mtv and they are bombareded constantly with the message that a) all women are bitches and hoes b) doing drugs is a cool thing c) dont respect anyone.

This should be interesting. I know there are a lot of guys on this board who are into "gore porn," (executions, torture, accidents, public suicides, snuffs, "sidewalk souffle," etc.). Personally, whenever I know a link goes somewhere like that, I will not click on it. I just think there are better images to put into my head than images of agony and death, and I really would like one of the fans of this sort of thing to explain why they like it.

I think we need to make a distinction between real and stylized violence. I know I react totally differently when I know I am seeing someone get hurt or killed than when I know it's an actor and a gun loaded with blanks. Ditto for a vid of someone really getting beaten up and a Jet Li fight scene which I know is rehearsed and the intention is to get through the scene without inflicting serious harm.

I do believe that someone turns a bad corner when they go from enjoying dramatic fake violence to enjoying violence in which they KNOW someone has been harmed or killed.

Good point i agree that there is definatly a differnece between "Hollywood" violence and realistic violence. I just find it interesting that people are obsessed with protecting their children from sex but then buy them toy guns for XMas. :ak47:

going with the generalised limits of this discussion, violence is worse then porn.

the most destructive thing, as was already pointed out, are negative ideas devaluing others and promoting destructive behaviour. the last thing the world needs are a bunch of swearing misogynist brats.

This is an age-old discussion for sure, without any real solid answers. I would rather my 10 year old boy see some tits then to see someone's head blown off, but I would rather he watch a boxing match than to see a giant cumshot facial. It's all relative...

However, the bottom line is that violence will always be accepted over porn. Violence is part of real life that's easier to talk about, however, very few people "really" want to admit that they like porn. Time and time again we have seen people that have declared porn as disgusting and filthy, only to see them arrested later for some offense associated with it!
