Chess software?
Would anyone happen to know some good chess software with multiple difficulty settings? All the chess programs I have consistently kick my ass, and don't have an "easy" level. (I think it's idiocy to make chess software for normal use that gets an elo-rating of over 2400, but that could just be me).
And yes, I know I'm a geek, however, so is my girlfriend, so I don't care :) |
hmmm.... well, good chess software would probably be made by imperialist arrogant US developers, and you wouldn't want to support that would you? Maybe Iraq has some good software....

I used to use ichess it was good for games with people online....and its single player difficulty was quite hard...
I preferred playing a nice 8 hour game in the background while I worked...against a competent foe. Anyone down for a game? |

Don't laugh at me but I don't know how to play chess. I don't want to sit and read a book but rather do something hands-on. Is there any program out there that will teach me?

If you know all the rules, you could start out with playing against a very weak computer (or people on yahoo chess), and just learn gradually. However, if you really want to become good, some reading is probably necessary. |

(I've been playing since I was about 7) Best thing to do is to read up at least enough to learn the basic moves and rules.... then you can start working on different strategies. Once you get there.... my advice is: Be absolutely fucking ruthless!!! No fuckin' mercy baby! :glugglug (that's easier said than done though... in chess, ya gotta be smart and always stay three steps ahead of your opponent, or he'll take you out at the first opportunity) |
Yeah if you just want to play chess...the rules are simple you just need to play...
if you want to employ certain defenses/offenses then you need to read and play... either way you need to play... |

Amp...I got sidetracked dude...sorry...I'm gonna get it set up...lets plan to go at it starting around...uhhhmmmm....
high noon pst tomorrow... |
Getting beat is not always bad. Every time you lose -- see how the computer put you in checkmate... there are lots of ways to be put into checkmate -- everytime you lose... Best way to play is to play for both players -- you should always know your opponents best move after every move you make.
Anyway chess takes a really long time to master -- holy shit. I use a program called "winboard" -- it real quick and fast but no skill levels -- it ALWAYS wins -- the fucking thing is always like 20 moves ahead of me LOL... Blah anyway why bother with a computer try the games.yahoo.com shit -- you can play real people. |
as much as chess is strategy -- there is also game flow I think I call it... I there are turning points in the game -- if you are playing a real person you can set the pace and catch people off guard... or if you are on Yahoo you can taunt the people... like "my queen is going to fuk you up bad!" -- adds another element to the game... you can notice they make stupid decisions after you taunt them a little bit LOL...
