M.I.T. enters the cheating game!
Check out www.searchwithporn.com , not only does
he spider without your banner ads, he offers it as as service! I suggest that anyone that has ever produced or paid for their content drop Mr. Schiller the network admin at M.I.T a quick note telling him what you think about university resources being used to commit mass theft. Damn, MIT admins are always getting in trouble. Like that guy who got nailed hard for file sharing.
Still, how is this different that the fusker problem? Simple .htaccess fix. And, it looks like the MIT servers are *only* being used for name resolution. |
Nope, that's an old class A. It's being served right
off the school network. |
For one thing, there's no such thing as a simple htaccess fix. If he's willing to eat his own bandwidth (and on MIT's servers, why not?) then he can simply have his script throw out the proper referer/cookie information.
For another thing, whether or not it can be stopped is not really the question. Leaving the door to your house unlocked does not make it legal for people to steal your shit. I didn't check it out, myself, but assuming it is on MIT's server I am a bit surprised they are letting this go on. SpaceAce |
inertia.mit.edu? sorry, my bad.
As far as it being a simple fix, I agree that Rewrite is not the world's simplest module, but hotlinking is a problem that gets addressed over and over here. He can definitely play games to work around work arounds if he's stubborn. http://jis.mit.edu:8001/ I think polite might be the best way to handle this. edit: look up mit's original dns record. same name. i'd definitely go with politeness, as this guy doesn't necessarily have a boss. |
MIT. Those rat bastards rejected my transfer application for admissions because I didn't take Chemistry in high school or at my previous school. That despite my promise (i.e. plea) that I would take it in the Summer. Now that's character analysis.

Sykkboy,
You always know the price of admission. How much to ride a rocket? |

the rocket? that, my friend, would entail a lot of ky jelly and some vinyl gloves...I can't get too specific on details, but I think you can figure out the rest... |
