6 of my parent's Parrot's died all at once...let this be a warning for bird owners.

Do not use self cleaning ovens with your Parrots inside the home. I guess my mother had the oven set to self clean and close to the end of the cycle all 3 birds violently started to pass one after the other. In total she lost 3 Cockatiel's, 1 Cockatoo, 1 Conure and a Blue and Gold Macaw that has been in my family for 15 years since he was 3 months old.

So here is a warning. Do not use self cleaning ovens with birds in the house.

Young 12-02-2007 09:19 PM

The Macaw managed to make it to the hospital but passed shortly after. According to the vet the toxins that are in non stick surfaces are deadly to birds and act as an acid of sorts inside of them and shut down their respiratory system. This toxin is released during the self cleaning oven process.

He also warned against cooking on non stick surfaces around birds.

how exactly did a self cleaning oven kill the birds? All a self cleaning oven does is get extremely hot and burn all the shit inside it to ash.

Two ways, the ovens have a form of non-stick coating that when heated to 900 degrees will give off fumes toxic to birds.

New ovens have a coating on the racks that burns off and is also toxic to birds.

If you are a serious bird owner and read anything about birds, internet, magazines, this same basic information is repeated ad nauseam.

Yes, miners used to clean their ovens in the mines because they thought they would get the birds intelligence when they killed it with gas.

I don't even have bird and know this is common knowledge. Your parents had multiple birds, some costing upwards of $2k for over 15 years and they didn't know this?

Wow. That really sucks. Sorry to hear.

Why 12-03-2007 09:16 AM

thats a bummer, my dad always had nice birds while i was growing up. all gone now though.

When the teflon coating inside them gets really hot it releases fumes that are extremely toxic to birds. I've seen someone overheat a teflon frying pan and their parakeet fell dead from the air in mid-flight.

That shit is bad news for birds.

SCORE Ralph 12-03-2007 09:42 AM

Im not too sure it applies to only birds though.
