earthquake?

so, evidently, there was an earthquake the other night that made some people nervous - but - nothing big enough to wake me up - so - does this mean that a bggie is coming? - it always seems to happen around the latter part of summer - does the heat have something to do with this? no more questions your honor...

where do ya reside here in l.a.?

if you're anywhere near chatsworth it shook the hell out of us. the actual epicenter was 4 miles north north west of chatsworth, or simi valley pretty much.

it registered 4.6.

not sure where you are, but up here it was a nice jolt for 3-4 seconds.

some small breakages of stuff falling from shelves in supermarkets and few glasses falling from tables but no major damage.

over and out.

hehe.

:):thumbsup

damn, when did this happen? I live in marina del rey and didnt feel shit... makes me nervous tho because i havent paid my earthquake insurance this year. but then again i hear it is worthless if you rent anyway (because its funded through the state, not private insurance companies).

Here is a tip: earthquake insurance is a scam. If it is a big one we will be declared a disaster area and eligible for low interest government loans.

My cousin's home was trashed pretty well in the Sylmar quake back in '71 and got a really nice remodel done of their home as a result.

it's ok, there was a tornado here in NY and it didnt wake me up.

It wasn't that big or that long, really.

But it was the second one that I've felt this month after a long period of not feeling one...

And it's increasing in intensity, so yeah, we could have a big one in the next month or so... or we could go the rest of our lives in SoCal without feeling another one (though I'd doubt that)... not even the most intelligent of seismologists knows the answer... so don't worry about not knowing. :)

And to answer your heat question... the epicenters of most earthquakes are miles underground... far away from the effects of daily surface temperature changes. It's all in the plate tectonics - and nearly all of the heat energy down there is coming from all the molten rock churning around.

Remember - the Earth's crust (the part we live on) is the coldest part of the Planet... if you were digging a deep hole in the ground, it might get cooler for the first 1000 or so meters you dig down, but after that (less than a mile down) it starts warming up.

this makes sense - thanks for the common knowledge explanation - earthquakes are definately the drawback to living here - that and the cost of living

Thats what I heard, but if my stuff inside my apartment gets trashed because the roof falls on it, I dont think my regular insurance company will cover it, nor does earthquake insurance.

doesnt matter tho because I have my all-in-one looting kit ready for such problems (contains 1 hammer, 1 wheel barrel and 1000 stickers that says "property of bossku69 - do not touch") :winkwink:
