I've only taken a few IQ Tests in my day and this is the norm score I get. I'm good with that. :thumbsup

I'd guess the GFYers who got in the 12-55 range just didn't bother posting their results ... esp. after the "these are rigged to give high scores" comment.

Looking at the thread so far, nobody has posted a score yet that wouldn't place them in the top 10% of most intelligent people. Doesn't that make you slightly suspicious of the test? (hint: look at the number of thread views, the scores reported here, and an IQ percentile chart)

I don't want to waste too much time on this, so I'll just point out the obvious: the real test here is whether or not you choose to believe a site offering "PhD certified" tests like the Ancient Tarot test, the Zodiac Match test, the How Sinful Are You? test, the Karma test, etc.

Why you got to piss on my parade here? I know it's not the most credible IQ Test around but there has to be some validity to it if I scored a 138 on a credible IQ Test that my pops gave me when I was about 18. He worked as a psychologist for the school system and so I have to assume the test was credible. I even went through the test again and just chose the 1st answer for every question and got an 82. Doesn't help the credibility of this test one bit in my opinion. You're right I would like to believe my IQ is still around a 135, I've done a lot to damage my brain cells in the past 10 years! :1orglaugh

I scored comparably high on the test...

But the score was also 19% lower than I have achieved on a couple of actual IQ tests (with a proctor and a stop-watch, etc) that I took a couple of decades ago.... I was tested with 2 different standardized tests - and had, roughly, the same score.

So... I'm guessing that either the drugs have caught up with me, or the test is bunk.

Hmm. Just took the test and indeed, it is bullshit. (I scored 142 on this, so no, I'm not expressing anger over a low score)

The second page asks what "fallacious" means. Vocabulary isn't intelligence, it's vocabulary. There might be a correlation between the two, but vocabulary also indicates ones upbringing and interests - things IQ tests should not test.

Another question asks "if wisdom is knowing what to do, ___ is doing it", giving both "virtue" and "sanity" as possible answers. The answer I presume they're looking for is virtue, but that would only be the correct answer when dealing with ethical dilemmas. Practical dilemmas, on the other hand, may require mere sanity once one knows what to do.

Obviously, the test is filled with bad questions.

Apart from that, the test is way too short to be serious. That goes for all IQ tests (after all, any interesting dilemma will take days, weeks, months or even years to solve), but for this one especially.

There are no questions that warrant even a minute of thought, so this test is completely irrelevant when it comes to the kind of intelligence required to solve more complex problems.

What it all comes down to is that this test is mere entertainment, certainly not science.

I also agree with what you're saying on the adage/vocabulary front - as they're not testing solely on symbolic, applied, and abstract logic, but also on your experience in using modern standards in symbolic expression... kinda perverts the whole thing a touch.

For example, someone who had read Plato's The Apology would know that Socrates pronounced that "wisest is he who knows he does not know," and have the hand-up in the related question...

Learn what a word means, and then use words to correctly express what you you mean to, I say... whether the word be newfangled or outmoded... if it's in the dictionary, it's fair game.

Considering that Einstein's IQ is thought to be about 150, there are a lot of geniuses on GFY.

Einstein never actually took an IQ test, so the speculation on his IQ is pretty much meaningless. Even more so when you realize that most psychologists are absolute idiots.

In fact, the latter point is why I don't particularly trust even skillfully made IQ tests. The people creating contemporary IQ tests most certainly aren't the greatest minds of our time. How are they supposed to measure things like creativity, insight or recognition of complex structures? How would these average minds even succeed in successfully identifying intelligence?

One might also wonder whether these things can even be expressed quantitatively. A brilliant but careless mathematician, who is prone to making small mistakes but has a talent for recognizing underlying mechanisms could create brilliant theories yet still get low scores on IQ tests, while a quick but shallow puzzle fanatic would easily get a higher score. Should the puzzle fanatic be considered more intelligent?

In my humble opinion, IQ tests merely provide an extremely accurate way of measuring ones aptitude at taking IQ tests.
