Diary: Woods reflects on winning three straight tournaments Aug. 24, 2006

By Tiger Woods

I?m pretty comfortable with my golf swing right now. Winning three-in-a-row is a great feeling, especially when two are major championships. I didn?t show as much emotion Sunday at Medinah when I won the PGA Championship as I did last month when I won the British Open at Hoylake, but both were special. The British was my first victory since 'pops' passed away, so that hit me pretty hard.

I used driver 18 times at Medinah -- 14 on the par 5s and four on the par-4 12th. I would have used it more, but I was hitting the ball to the same spots with my fairway woods and 3-iron and hit virtually the same clubs into the greens as I did when I won there in 1999. The ball goes further and the club technology is better. Plus, with so many tight doglegs, I would have hit driver through the fairway on most holes.

I think the thing I?m proudest of is making only three bogeys. Granted, the greens and fairways were pretty soft, but it?s not an easy course. I was patient, controlled my trajectory, hit the ball to the proper spots, and didn?t make many mistakes. That?s how you win major championships.

Of course, it helps to putt well, too. Before I went to the driving range on Sunday to warm up, Hank Haney helped me with my putting. I didn?t like the way my shoulders were pointing and we worked on getting my body better aligned. I hit basically two putts that were pure and said it felt okay, let?s see where it takes us. I made a nice birdie putt at the first hole, then I was off and running. Then I made two 40-footers and just knew it was going to be one of those magical days.

My favorite moments of the tournament were making the 30-foot par putt at No. 1 on Saturday, and the long bunker shot at 13 on Sunday, where I managed to save par. The latter was easily my best up-and-down of the year. Both came in key situations and helped me win.
