Who out there has still not done their taxes?

I'll fess up that I am still fussing with mine. Anyone else put them off this long?

twistyneck 04-14-2002 09:21 PM

Haven't even started yet. I could probably just get them done in a couple hours but man, I hate doing them. I may just file the extension again this year and do them over the summer.

Vox 04-14-2002 09:23 PM

Haven't done mine in over 4 years... Just waiting for the vacation from ClubPen the Goverment will be sending me.

I try to think of it as a game that if I play right, I win prize money... I love the IRS website by the way. Everything I ever need in language I will never fully understand.

Um... don't you need to still do your taxes even if you file for an extension? I thought the extension was only for delaying paying what you owe?

:(

I went for years without filing once. Then one day, I had a panic attack and did them all at once. They were actually very nice about the whole thing and I didn't even get a nasty letter.

phogirl69 04-14-2002 10:46 PM

I just filed an extension....

I went to a local CPA and it was pretty painless... but I still had to mail the IRS my payments.

My accountant told me that I can't deduct a portion of my rent ( I work from home) unless I use the ENTIRE area for business purposes only. Can anyone confirm if this is correct? Someone else told me that you CAN deduct a percentage of your rent for business expenses depending on how large your workspace area is.

FlyingIguana 04-14-2002 10:51 PM

i might do em this week

fuckin government wouldn't give me money to start my business cuss its adult, but they sure want the taxes on the money i make.

Yes, you still have to pay even if you file an extension. You have to estimate the amount of money you will owe for the year and estimate your taxes based on that. My cpa told me you won't be penalized if you pay at least 80% of the amount owed.

I'm broke now :(

Forkbeard 04-14-2002 10:55 PM

Did 'em yesterday, but haven't mailed the form and the money yet.

I have a small room 12x12 that has nothing but my computer/internet stuff in it and get to deduct a percentage of my rent/electric/phone. They view it as a dedicated office.

The area you use has to be more or less sealed off from the rest of the house. The sqare footage dedicated to your desk won't cut it, it has to be a totally separate area.

That particular deduction is likely to cause trouble for you unless you are really careful about it.

[Labret] 04-14-2002 11:14 PM

Even though I have a home office that is used nearly 100% of the time for work, I have never written off a home office.

Every accountant I have every talked to told me that if I can just do without home office deductions, that I will be better off because it is one of the biggest audit flags and a favorite target of the IRS.

And since I have never heard of anyone walking out of an audit with their anus intact, I will live without writing it off.

Brad Mitchell 04-15-2002 07:28 AM

I hate accounting... I don't actually do much, my CPA does it all. However, I always procrastinate reviewing everything. I need to give them a call and file the extensions!

Correct.

If you have a 3 bedroom home, you must dedicate whatever room you choose for just business purposes. Then you must calculate the percent of that space vs. the rest of the ENTIRE house. You can't just say the room is worth $500 bucks. So if you have a 180ft² room with a 1700ft² house..that's a measily 10.5 percent of your mortgage that you can claim.

It would be alot easier to just rent space from some house and claim that as your office.
