I'd also add about having some solid documentation on everything the software does, how to configure it, etc.

Regardless if it's a $5 - $525,000 piece of software, have some documents on it.

Agreed 50 days ago i brought some software from someone who posts here, not cheap at nearly $500.00 and still it isn't working correctly. Apparently it has to be modified to suit my sites. Why the fuck don't these guys let you know up front these facts and let you know once they get your money they could give a shit. If the software isn't fully working by tomorrow ( Sunday ) i will be posting on all boards to warn people about this GFY name.....
